Backstory Summary:
Lux was found abandoned at a destroyed camp as a baby. Nobody knows where exactly he came from. He was found and raised by a Wyverian, who was the chieftain to a village of monster riders. When Lux was old enough, he became a monster rider. His first Monstie was a Rathian he named Jasper. Later, he got a Stygian Zinogre egg and named her Ruby.

One day, Ruby became infected with the frenzy virus, before its (in-game debut) discovery by the Hunter’s Guild. Lux was badly hurt by Ruby, and two massive scars formed across his chest. Lux was never really the same since. He practically stopped riding monsters because it gave him survivor’s guilt. Jasper refused to leave his side, but he couldn’t bring himself to ride his loyal monstie.

Lux later became a trader for his village. He’d travel to and from his village to towns to trade. One day, while he was making a trade, his kinship stone resonated with a captured and scared Barroth in a nearby cage, which sent it into a rampage. Nobody could stop it until Lux hopped on the monster’s head and shouted a command that got it to calm down. The guild knights arrested Lux and the guild deemed him responsible for the damages caused to the city. He spent a few years in prison, neglected because the guild found out he was a rider and they didn’t like the philosophy riders followed, until a higher up from the hunter’s guild offered him a compromise to reduce his sentence. Lux would have to work for the guild, and begrudgingly, Lux agreed.

Lux then became a guardian. He was trained to use the lance, but he was never really good at it. When monsters would attack at his post, he defended valiantly and would even repel monsters with aggressive dedication. He didn’t know it at the time, but he developed a strong desire to protect because of what happened to Ruby. The guild would notice his drive, and wanted him to become a hunter. Lux was already sick of the guild, but he wanted out from civilization’s walls and missed the freedom of nature, so he agreed again.

As a hunter, he picked up the greatsword because he was already familiar with it during his time riding monsters. When he saw other hunters get critically hurt, his protective instincts flared up and decided to change his weapon.

Lux tried using the lance again, but it reminded him of his previous job so he stopped using it cold turkey. Then he tried the sword and shield, but he felt like the shield was too small to protect his comrades. He used the hammer, gunlance and bow intermittently for a while.

When the charge blade was being developed, he volunteered to test it. Nowadays, he uses charge blade almost exclusively.

Lux was good at hunting, but he didn’t like being a hunter. He felt like the hunter’s guild and hunters were overglorified, and that both were antagonizing monsters. Lux began to act cold towards people, including his fellow hunters, because of their comments, demeanor and pride.

Sometimes, Lux would get into fights with all sorts of people because of his unpopular opinions. The guild let him know that they didn’t like the trouble he was getting himself into, so he was forced to learned to keep his mouth shut (for the most part).

Lux was a high rank hunter in the Old World. The guild wanted to make him into a G-rank hunter, but Lux was making it difficult for them to promote him (on purpose). Instead, the guild decided to send him to the New World. Lux didn’t want to go to the New World, but the job description sounded simpler than G-rank, so he relented.

If Lux became a G-rank hunter, he would have be pardoned for his crimes, but he’d basically have to fight elder dragon-level monsters. He’d gain back his freedom, but he’d be risking his life every time he’d go on a hunt. He didn’t want the idea of potentially killing millions for failing a single G-hunt.

If Lux went to the New World, he’d still be working for the guild, but all he’d have to do is find out why the elder dragons are going there. It sounded like a researcher’s or scholar’s job, something easy. Best of all, he’d gain a new kind of freedom. But the guild only told him the bare minimum about the Research Commission’s mission. He didn’t know he’d end up fighting elder dragons anyways.

While on the ship to the New World, Aiden found Lux and chatted him up. Lux knew Aiden as Julius’s pupil. Neither Lux nor Julius like each other because they both think that the other is too prideful for their own good. Aiden thought the two men were super cool. Lux just thought Aiden was too naive for his age, and annoying.

Before he even got to the New World, Zorah Magdaros almost killed him and numerous other people on the ship he was on. He felt like the guild had tricked him, and he was very antagonistic of the Commission because they worked for the guild. Although Lapis, a New World generation hunter, had helped him numerous times, he wasn’t welcoming of her at first either.

At first, Lux tried to self-manage his reports, but the Field Team Leader felt like he couldn’t accurately validate the reports. Lux then forced himself to hunt together with Aiden and his handler Lea, because he kept having trouble with other hunters and handlers. Some hunters didn’t like him, and he didn’t like other hunters. Some handlers didn’t like him, and he didn’t like some of the handlers. Some of the groups were at capacity; some handlers had too many hunters to manage.

When Aiden was almost killed by a Diablos in the Wildspire Waste, Lux became furious with Aiden and Lea, and brashly left their group. After he got revenge on the monster that almost killed Aiden with Lapis’s help, Lux began to work with Lapis permanently.

Much later, after the mystery of the elder migration was resolved, Lux had the choice to return to the Old World. Although he’d never admit it, he didn’t want to leave his new best friend behind, so he decided to stay.

Notes:

  • Lux is deathly afraid of black dragons because he believes in the fairy tales that feature them.
  • When Lux was a new hunter, he had to have a guild knight with him at all times. This knight was to serve as his parole officer.
    • Lux had to cycle through a couple of knights because of affiliation reasons.
      • The first knight managed to befriend Lux and got reposted.
      • The second knight was saved from certain death by Lux.
  • Lux was once in a relationship with one of his old hunting partners. The woman he was with was heavily invested in the relationship because she had a massive crush on Lux when they first met.
    • The woman was the one who started and ended the relationship, but she is not bitter towards Lux. She knows he lost someone he loved, but she doesn’t know who it was.
    • Lux was indifferent about the relationship. He was not invested, but he wouldn’t turn the woman away either. He knows he was the problem because he was very emotionally unavailable. He feels bad for the woman because he thinks he led her on by not rejecting her from the start.
  • Lux had a crush on a childhood friend from his village. The friend also had a crush on him. When Ruby died, the friend began to have conflicting emotions because she knows Lux essentially became a different person. Lux’s feelings never changed though.
    • This childhood friend knew Ruby.
  • Jasper the rathian is still alive. She has made her home in the surrounding area around the village and has had a few baby Raths herself. She sometimes visits the village to see Lux’s childhood friend. Jasper still remembers Lux and is waiting for the day he can come home.
  • Lux shows suicidal behavior by throwing himself into danger in the defense of others. Lux does not argue when accused of this behavior.
    • Lux doesn’t do this to try to kill himself though. He knows he’s good at hunting and fighting, so he knows he can protect someone, but every time he does, he is still risking his own life.
  • Lux’s Palico is Copy in a Felyne form. With the converging universe theory that World features, it’s the best way for me to label Lux as my Monster Hunter OC online.
    • Copy’s story has her get stuck in the Monster Hunter universe during a convergence. She takes the form of a Felyne in order to hide from monsters and hunters alike. It’s not clear how she met Lux, but Lux allows her to stick with him.
  • On a personal note: Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was my first Monster Hunter game!
    • Monster Hunter World was my fiance’s first Monster Hunter game, and he named his Hunter Lapis. Lapis plays a major role in Lux’s life while in the New World.
