Mallowshine was born in Duskclan to Hickorylarch and Gingerflight alongside her brother Hemlockstem. The two were always close growing up, Mallowkit more boisterous and rowdy than her brother. When they became apprentices, their hopes of training together were squashed as Midnightstar made Hemlockpaw into a medicine cat apprentice. Mallowpaw was assigned to Midnightstar herself, and began training almost immediately.
Midnightstar focused heavily on battle training, leaving Mallowpaw basically on her own to figure out hunting. Once, she came across Spruceleaf, the medicine cat and Hemlockpaw's mentor, teaching him basic hunting moves, and Mallowpaw was able to copy them and learn quickly. During some of the battle training with Midnightstar, they were joined by another apprentice named Vinepaw. Midnightstar always seemed more interested in Vinepaw's progress, making Mallowpaw competitive against the other apprentice, yet never able to best him, fueling her frustration and annoyance toward him.
Mallowshine and Hemlockstem both soon received their names, and now had more time to spend with each other. Vinesnake received his name as well, and began showing affection to Mallowshine, but she wasn't interested. All she saw was the same apprentice who taunted her, stole her mentor, making her desperate to please her. Then, one day when Mallowshine was hunting, she came upon a kittypet. The kittypet said his name was Jax, and it turned out he had gotten lost. Mallowshine helped him back to his Twoleg nest, and Jax told her he'd be on the fence the next day if she wanted to come on by.
She wasn't going to, but when she got back to camp Vinesnake was there, again, trying to flirt with her. She wasn't interested, but Vinesnake didn't seem to get that. Mallowshine ended up going to see Jax, finding his company refreshing, and found herself at the Twoleg nest day after day after day. And before she knew it, she had a dream that she was in the Nursery, with kits, and with Jax. She knew immediately what it meant. Mallowshine hurried to the Twolegplace to inform her love that she was pregnant, optimistic and excited. But Jax saw reality. He knew he could never be a clan cat, and Mallowshine could never be a kittypet. He tried explaining this to her, and left. Mallowshine didn't fully understand, and felt like she'd been dumped.
She went back to camp and came to Hemlockstem in tears, not knowing what to do. She explained the entire situation to her brother, who advised that she accept Vinesnake as her mate. Mallowshine agreed, panicked and not seeing a better solution. She and Vinesnake became mates, but it was always awkward and tense between them. But Mallowshine put in work to hold their relationship together, and she had her kits, Specklekit, Kitekit, and Loonkit, early into leafbare. But Vinesnake had his suspicions. Mallowshine picked up on this, and tried to not let him see the kits, which only fueled his suspicions more, creating a cycle.
Finally she couldn't take it anymore. Extraordinarily stressed by just everything, Mallowshine took the three kits with her into a snowstorm, praying that they'd make it to the Twolegplace. Loonkit was the first to collapse from the cold, then Kitekit. Mallowshine was frightened and desperate; she and her only daughter Specklekit pressed on. They made it to the Twoleg fence, and Mallowshine picked her up to carry her over. She banged desperately on the door until Jax appeared, alarmed. Mallowshine went to give Specklekit to Jax, only to find she was already dead.
Jax helped Mallowshine bury her kits, and Mallowshine returned to find the camp in an uproar. Vinesnake had tried to check on them during the night, and when he saw they were not there, made enough noise to wake up the whole camp. Mallowshine was pummeled with questions, and she cracked, spilling everything. Midnightstar was furious, and about to exile her, when Hemlockstem came into the camp with three newborn kittens. He vehemently argued for Mallowshine to stay, at least until these kits were apprenticed, and after much arguing, Midnightstar relented. Once Hemlockstem, Mallowshine, and the three new kits; Driftkit, Heronkit, and Chivekit, were in the privacy of the Nursery, Mallowshine pushed as to where these kits came from. She had noticed that he, Driftkit, and Heronkit had six toes and concluded correctly that these were his kits. Hemlockstem told her the mother was a Nightclan warrior, who died after the birth. Mallowshine promised not to tell.
The three kits grew up, and Mallowshine showered them in love, grateful she had the opportunity to be a mother. The rest of the clan treated Mallowshine like a prisoner, but she paid them no mind. The day came when the three kits became apprentices, and Mallowshine left without a fuss. She went to live with Jax, and the two spent happy time together. Mallowshine would go out and bring him presents, or show him hunting moves. One day while out getting a present, Mallowshine ran into Vinesnake. Vinesnake attacked, and the two ran to a snake nest unknowingly. Mallowshine defended against Vinesnake when one of the snakes bit her, sending her to Starclan.
From there, she watched the rest of Hemlockstem's life: him finding and burying her body, confronting Vinesnake, revealing Chivepaw, Driftpaw, and Heronpaw's parentage. He voluntarily left the clan and died after chasing a rabbit off a ravine cliff. Mallowshine waited patiently for him to show up in Starclan, but to her confusion, he didn't. The other Starclan cats revealed to her that Hemlockstem was in Limbo, atoning for betraying and abandoning his duties as a medicine cat. Furious, she left Starclan to help her brother, despite knowing she wouldn't be accepted back in. Mallowshine helped Hemlockstem get into Starclan, watching Chivemist, Driftear, and Herondove receive their names, seeing Vinestar become the new leader. When Hemlockstem did get into Starclan, Mallowshine was happy to see him go, knowing she wouldn't join him. She went to Jax, observing him quietly as a ghost, wishing she could tell him why she hadn't returned. Then one night, she found herself back in Starclan's hunting grounds. Hemlockstem had argued for her place back in Starclan, until they eventually relented and let her back in. The two siblings gleefully reunited, finally settling into an afterlife of peace.
