Sparrowlight was born while Smokeclan was traveling to Marigoldpuddle and Flintstep with her sister Frecklepaw. She and her sister were very close. When they became apprentices, Smokeclan was still quite disorganized, and so their parents were assigned as their mentors. Sparrowpaw was mentored by their father Flintstep, and Frecklepaw was mentored by their mother Marigoldpuddle.
The two apprentices would often sneak away from camp to explore the new territory and get into trouble. On one of these outings, Sparrowpaw and Frecklepaw came upon a bush with bright red berries. Sparrowpaw dared Frecklepaw to eat one, not knowing that they were deathberries. Frecklepaw, not one to be upstaged, ate a berry and promptly died.
Sparrowpaw was horrified, and spent the rest of her apprenticeship in a daze, now always close to her father's side. She blamed herself for Frecklepaw's death, and thought that her parents did too. When she became a warrior, she spent much of her time alone, going for walks outside camp. On one of these walks she ran across another Smokeclan warrior, Scarletfrost. Maybe it was the light that day, maybe it was the perfect weather, maybe something inside Sparrowlight was growing tired of always being alone, but seeing Scarletfrost made something inside Sparrowlight flutter and swoon. She quickly realized she had a crush. Except Scarletfrost was a she-cat as well.
Sparrowlight was confused. She had never heard of two she-cats becoming mates before, yet no matter how much she tried to smother it down and ignore it, everytime she saw her her heart sang out. She was a clumsy mess around Scarletfrost and had no one to talk to about her crush, the only one she would consider she had killed, and Smokeclan had not found a way to talk with Starclan.
Finally she could not take it anymore. Sparrowlight got up in the middle of the night, a perfect half-moon hung in the sky. She left Smokeclan, deciding that it was the only way she could deal with her feelings. Sparrowlight moved through Smokeclan's territory and a bit beyond, and came across a stream. She took a drink from it, and fell asleep.
When she opened her eyes next, Sparrowlight was shocked to find herself in Starclan. And who else to greet her but Frecklepaw! Sparrowlight was overjoyed to see her sister again, and Frecklepaw had to quickly reassure her that she was not dead, just that she had found the Moonstream, and now Smokeclan could talk with Starclan! Sparrowlight and Frecklepaw were able to have a long overdue conversation with each other yet again. Frecklepaw assured Sparrowlight that she had no hard feelings over the deathberry incident, and that she should not blame herself over it. Frecklepaw also encouraged Sparrowlight to confess her feelings to Scarletfrost.
After waking up, Sparrowlight excitedly went back to Smokeclan's camp, joyfully proclaiming that she had discovered the Moonstream. The clan was overjoyed to have found a way to speak with Starclan, and Sparrowlight confessed her feelings to Scarletfrost, asking her to be her mate. Scarletfrost was surprised at first, but quickly accepted. The two of them lived happily in Smokeclan, and Sparrowlight would often visit the Moonstream to talk with her sister.
Sparrowlight was killed before Leafsun and Emberblaze's groups split off from Smokeclan, having died by someone feeding her deathberries.
