Emerson doesn't remember her childhood, but she was found in the desert alone with severve radiation poisoning. It's caused her to go blind and occasionaly bleed from her nose and lesions on her skin. She runs the local radio program broadcast from the bunker that contains weather and radiation reports, safe location coordinates, and thanks to Emerson, stories from old books and other survivors and other fun radio stuff. She's well liked and tuning into Emerson's broadcast has become a cultural thing in the wasteland.
