Abilities: can turn objects grayscale which renders them either generally unable to be used, frail and easily breakable, or both; can turning living things partially grayscale, which is on the same level as what a deep scrape, causing pain in that area (to use either of these abilties, they can shoot small balls of grayscale-color/light at the thing/person or touch them; these balls are intangible to others, so they can’t catch them, but they can be hit by them)
More advanced abilities: if they fully lose control of their emotions, they can turn others fully grayscale, which is like putting them in a coma—while doing this, Echo is blinded by their emotions and is somewhat taken over by their abilities
About them: Whenever Echo uses their magic, they fully turn grayscale. Depending on the strength of their emotions, other things around them can go gray too (most often their clothes and parts of surfaces they’re touching). The effect on other things is temporary—depending on how strong their emotions are and how much of a grip they have on their abilties at the moment, it can last for mere seconds or even months.
Echo comes from a family of generally not-very-powerful magicians who specialize in color abilities, which they have taught to each other for generations—they generally use these abilities for show, as they generally can’t really do much. (Occasionally every few generations or so, there are members that are more powerful than the others.) However, when they tried to use their abilities around their family, as they treat it like some kind of curse, not knowing why they are like this, let alone why it uncontrollably completely changes their color scheme when using their abilities. Unbeknownst to the family, Echo’s abilities are more powerful than theirs—and they barely know that themself. They are not allowed to use their abilities, as their family is worried that something bad will happen, as again they know little to nothing about their grayscale abilties; because of this, Echo themself doesn’t even know how to use their abilties like they should be able to, let alone know the full extent of them. (Guess you could say it’s an example of “fear what you don’t know.”)
When Echo was younger, their dream was always to help people. They’d read about famous super heroes and doodle more classic hero costumes in their free time. While their family never told them that they couldn’t go after this dream, they considered it to be a bit silly and childish. They haven’t told them this yet, thankfully.
Inspiration: Before drawing, I was thinking about how my drawings would be in grayscale and how I would translate the colors. I had an idea—what if the character was grayscale? Or when using their abilities, at least. I thought the idea was kind of neat and just rolled with it. :p
Their surname “Boyice” was inspired by the word “flamboyance”.
