Rowantuft was born in Tansyclan to Dovefire (Cinderlight's paternal aunt) and Dewberry (Aspenstep's maternal uncle) with his sisters Aspenfang, Elmheart, and Pinepaw. Dewberry didn't care about his kits, being completely absent, and Dovefire was often distracted with her own family issues, so Elmheart often took on a motherly role for her siblings. Aspenkit always resented their parents for everything they did, and roped Pinekit into feeling the same. Rowankit and Elmkit, however, understood that they were trying their hardest and still cared for them.
Rowanpaw was apprenticed to Barksplash, Elmpaw to Acornflurry, Pinepaw to Shadowtail, and Aspenpaw was apprenticed to Amberstar. Amberstar was harsh in her training, pushing Aspenpaw to her limits and beyond. She often came back from training sessions with cuts and scrapes, but waved it off when asked about it. Amberstar was vying to mold Aspenpaw into her image, creating a second, smaller version of herself. Elmpaw soon noticed the changes in her sister. She and Rowanpaw tried to talk to her about it, but Aspenpaw would wave them off or snap at them. So, the two siblings went to Pinepaw, who had always been closer to Aspenpaw.
Pinepaw, being apprenticed to the deputy, had grown cocky, pushing the other apprentices around. When Elmpaw and Rowanpaw approached her with their concerns, Pinepaw reluctantly agreed to help out. After a training session with Amberstar, Rowanpaw, Elmpaw, and Pinepaw cornered Aspenpaw to talk to her. Pinepaw started, and got Aspenpaw to confess the harsh and brutal nature of the training. But she refused to let anyone intervene, insisting this was making her stronger. She was proud to be Amberstar's apprentice, and nothing would take that away.
But Pinepaw wasn't so easily deterred. She argued to Shadowtail about Aspenpaw, she argued with Barksplash and Acornflurry about Aspenpaw, she even argued with Aspenpaw about Aspenpaw. She was not backing down, and argued with Amberstar to cut back on the brutality of the training. Amberstar quickly grew tired of Pinepaw's incessant nagging, and one night, brought her out to the river. Amberstar came back alone, and when a patrol was sent out, Pinepaw was found drowned.
Pinepaw's death crushed the siblings. Amberstar intensified Aspenpaw's training, Shadowtail retreated to the medicine cat den in mourning, and Elmpaw was suffocating with guilt. Rowanpaw decided to step up, to be Elmpaw's rock like she had been theirs during kithood. But he couldn't hold up forever, and after a couple moons of feeling trapped and alone, he finally confided in Dovefire. She listened heartily, and gave him some advice on dealing with it. Rowanpaw was surprised that she had listened to him, and even more so that she was so warm. Dovefire apologized for not being more there for them as kits, and promised to try and build a better relationship with them in the future. Rowanpaw accepted her apology, and continued to come to her for support and advice. He tried to tell Elmpaw about her change, but Elmpaw wasn't ready to forgive her. She was happy that Rowanpaw was happy, but she still resented Dovefire for forcing her into a role she was too young for.
After they became warriors, Aspenfang started training in the Dark Forest. She still wouldn't talk with her siblings, so Rowantuft resolved to train in the Dark Forest also, thinking their shared experience might bring them closer together. Through this he became friends with siblings Chamomileskip and Junipercry, who also made introductions with their other brother Thymecreek. The four got along together well, and Rowantuft eventually dragged Elmheart into their shenanigans. Elmheart figured out on her own that Rowantuft was training in the Dark Forest, but she decided not to confront him about it. By word of mouth in the Dark Forest, Aspenfang figured out that Rowantuft was in there as well. She confronted him, demanding to know what in the world was he thinking. They yelled at each other, the situation escalating until it almost broke into a full blown fight. Junipercry saved him, stepping in at the last moment and driving Aspenfang off. Rowantuft was in awe, and realized he had a crush on Junipercry. He and Junipercry started hanging out one-on-one, and Junipercry was who gave him the maple leaf, saying it matched his fur.
But not too long after this, Junipercry was killed in a spar with Lichenpaw, an apprentice from Leafclan. Thymecreek and Rowantuft comforted each other in their grief. Rowantuft talked with Chamomileskip, and found she had vowed to take revenge for her brother. The two decided to keep visiting the Dark Forest, and do their best to take it down from the inside. However, after an argument in front of the whole clan with Amberstar (who was also training in the Dark Forest), Amberstar exiled Chamomileskip, as well as the rest of her family, including her brother Thymecreek, their mother Willowbrook (one of the medicine cats), and Chamomileskip's uncles Barksplash and Hawkleap. Rowantuft was able to keep meeting her in the Dark Forest, though, often passing messages between her and Elmheart, as they both frequently asked about the other.
Dovefire was then killed by a hawk, protecting some kits, and Rowantuft found himself again leaning on Elmheart for support. Aspenfang decided that enough was enough, and put aside her petty grievances to help Rowantuft. At first, Elmheart was skeptical, and pushed against Aspenfang. However Rowantuft could see that she was trying her best, and gave her a chance to make it up to him. She apologized for her actions, and listened to some of his grief. She really was wanting to make a change for the better.
When the Dark Forest attacked, Rowantuft and Elmheart fought side by side, viciously and determinedly against the Dark Forest cats. Rowantuft fought for Junipercry, and Elmheart fought for Rowantuft. During the battle, Aspenfang was indecisive on whose side to fight. In her hesitation, Dewberry caught sight of her. He assumed that she was fighting for the Dark Forest, and attacked, causing her to retaliate in self-defense. She killed him, and when the battle finally ended, ran away from the clan, becoming a loner. She knew how bad it looked for her, and couldn't bear to see the disappointment on Elmheart and Rowantuft's faces. The pair found Dewberry's body during the cleanup, with Aspenfang's scent all over him. Barksplash was also killed in Leafclan during the fight.
Amberstar was killed in the fighting, and Shadowtail became Shadowstar, coming out as non-binary as well. They made Acornflurry their deputy. Word came in from Leafclan that Barksplash was killed in the fight, but Hawkleap was alright. Chamomileskip had gone to warn Sunclan, she was fine, and Willowbrook and Thymecreek had gone to Emberclan in the same spirit, and also made it through. Hawkleap and Chamomileskip returned to Tansyclan. Elmheart and Chamomileskip became closer, and then became mates. Leafclan and Emberclan both lost their medicine cats, so Willowbrook went to be Leafclan's temporary medicine cat, while Thymecreek stayed in Emberclan for the same reason. But eventually, Willowbrook trained Rippleleaf to take over, and Emberclan found Juniper, a loner with healing knowledge, and so Willowbrook and Thymecreek were able to return home.
Thymecreek and Rowantuft had been staying in touch while Thymecreek was in Emberclan, but now that they were in the same clan once again, became closer rapidly, and also became mates. With Elmheart surrogating, Thymecreek and Rowantuft had a son together, Lavendersight. The thing with Lavendersight was that he was cursed by Starclan to see every single ghostly spirit, cursed because Thymecreek had found out like right after Lavenderkit was born, that one of his ghosts (Thymecreek could see the ghosts of all his dead family) was actually his Emberclan medicine cat father the whole time, and attacked his spirit, which made Starclan very angry. They ripped away his ghost family (they're all chilling in Starclan it's fine), and cursed Lavenderkit to punish Thymecreek. Rowantuft had no idea about any of this, and when Lavenderkit started talking to spirits he was a bit taken aback. Sometime when Lavendersight is a warrior, Chamomileskip and Elmheart have two kits, Chamomileskip carrying and Rowantuft siring. Chamomileskip and Elmheart have a daughter, Pollenburst, and a son, Duckpine (named after Pinepaw).
Thymecreek was wracked with guilt for Lavendersight's situation, and distanced himself from his son. Rowantuft was hugely supportive of his son, determined to give him the love and care he needed. However Rowantuft noticed Thymecreek's absence, and it created tension in their relationship, until one evening they had a huge fight about it, and ending up divorced. Lavendersight overheard. Rowantuft had left the scene before Lavendersight burst out and shouted at Thymecreek, prompting him to reveal that he too had once been able to see spirits. Lavendersight was already pushed to the brink, but this sent him over. Lavendersight raced to the Moonstream and began shoving boulders into it, with each boulder that hit another choir of ghosts silenced. Starclan sent out an SOS to all the medicine cats, who raced to stop Lavendersight, but it was too late. In an effort to stop him, Flystalk, the youngest Tansyclan medicine cat, blinded him. Lavendersight stumbled to the nearby river and fell in. Willowbrook had to break the news to Thymecreek and Rowantuft that Lavendersight was dead (he is not dead, btw, just presumed).
Rowantuft and Thymecreek were devastated when they heard. The clans moved to Sunclan's old territories, unable to contact Starclan, and Elmheart did her best to support her brother. Chamomileskip was made deputy, and during the move, Pollenpaw got stuck in a rabbit burrow. Lotusstar, Leafclan's leader, went in after her. The cats that were with Pollenpaw managed to dig her out, but before they could free her completely she started to panic and scrambled for freedom. The movement caused the tunnel to collapse behind her, crushing and permanently injuring one of her hind legs and also taking away one of Lotusstar's lives. Pollenpaw was able to recover quickly though, but Elmheart's attention was taken off of Rowantuft for her daughter. Rowantuft didn't blame her, and now his mournful gaze kept wandering over to Thymecreek.
