7N is a Navigator unit, an old, noncombat unit created by Command to explore and provide map data to androids out in the field. While her original purpose was rendered obsolete when Command finally gained control over a network of satellites that provided terrain data in real-time, she ended up not minding in the slightest. It gave her an opportunity to pursue her real passion: creating a detailed, accurate map of every single species of fish, insect, animal, and plant on Earth, and what regions they're located in.

Unfortunately, Command does not share her passion, but her zeal for collecting specimens and a lack of better assignments to give her has led them to shrug and allow it, though she is mostly ignored in favor of units that actually contribute to the wartime cause. Though she doesn't mind the lack of orders, she's saddened by the fact that this also means her regular, and very insistent, requests are ignored: no matter how many times she asks, Command won't give her another Pod or three, even if it would dramatically increase her specimen collection rate. Nor will they let her upload her collected data to the satellite network, claiming that it's "extraneous" and "unnecessary for combat purposes". Rather than view this with resentment, though, she sees it as just another obstacle to overcome with more data, and so she does just that, treating the war-torn planet like it's a town in Animal Crossing and fishing the day away.

Her treatment of her fellow androids is similarly lackadaisical. She likes to seek out Scanners, who will often listen to her impassioned rants about the local wildlife politely, even if they don't share in her enthusiasm. Sometimes, if she's lucky, they'll even tell her about some species that they've found on their own, which she will then immediately zoom off to investigate. She also tends to ignore combat-oriented units, knowing that they appreciate her findings about as much as Command does. Her Operator units, however, fare worst of all. Because she is such a low-priority unit, she usually ends up stuck with whatever Operator is lowest on the totem pole, so she goes through Operators very quickly, to the point where she's almost stopped bothering to remember their names. Which is all well and good, because her tendency to ignore warnings and venture into dangerous areas where other androids are carrying out their orders means a lot of headaches for whatever Operator is stuck with her. As a result, she's not only gone through a lot of Operators, but her Pod privileges have also been revoked numerous times.

The only reason 7N has a permanent pod is because it, technically, does not exist. Pod 037 was once a Scanner unit's pod that was lost in a large lake, and then subsequently rebuilt and reassigned the same code because it resumed its duties under the same android. What Command hadn't planned for was that 7N would find the discarded corpse of the old 037 and that she would be very, very stubborn. She took the waterlogged hunk of machinery to the seediest repairman the Resistance had to offer, and with no questions asked an no answers given, 7N got herself a free Pod. While its functions are rather limited, she fact that it's not constantly nagging at her about rules like an official, Command-assigned Pod more than makes up for it...especially when, because it technically shouldn't exist, Command sends her an official, second Pod anyways.
