In his heart, there's light that resides in there. Supposedly, this light can guide others out of the darkness and purify the darkness within others. At a young age, Yao realized he could harness this light and use to help others. However, this ability comes in with a price, depending on how much darkness Yao purifies, the ability inflicts physical damage on him, hence the amount of bandages on his body. The necklace Yao wears helps him harness his ability and control his ability.
