Backstory: Born to a merchant family in Tailfeather, Fio grew up happy to learn about sewing clothes to sell with his family but always desired to live in a lively city with a lot of fame. Once he turned 18, Fio moved to Ul'dah and eventually got a role as the Skull of Ymir in the Masked Carnivale. Along the way, Fio met Thancred who introduced him to the Scions after learning that Thancred also possessed the Echo. While Thancred preferred having flings, his particular fling with Fio lasted much longer than expected and they both ended up dating after all.
After The Bloody Banquet, Fio felt extremely depressed for what seemed like the first time ever in his life. Fearing that he would never see his newfound friends and boyfriend again, he desperately seeked out the aid of Astrologians in Ishgard. His proficiency in the destructive magics of Black Mage made it easy for him to pick up on spells such as Malefic and Gravity, but he struggled with healing magics and felt that his life had come to a dead end. After finding most of his friends again he would stress himself out imagining the worse case scenarios where he would lose them again. This instability, combined with Thancred feeling equally as instable in his own way, led to the two breaking up while the both of them wished each other luck in finding peace.
Fio continued to practice healing as a medic working alongside Ala Mhigo during its liberation, and unexpectedly gained a new sidekick in the process. A scrappy Raen by the name of Mashi received a lot of publicity, both from the Rebellion for her incredible strength and from the Imperials for no longer being Yotsuyu's secret weapon. Fio often found himself patching up this mysterious man after many close calls he had with Zenos targetting her.
Fio and Mashi were both brought to the First, as the Exarch believed that they balanced each other out and would not want their synergism to go to waste. While Emet-Selch seeked Fio out specially for being the Chaos he longed for, Emet-Selch also had the chance to mention to Mashi that he used to be Chaos' sea serpent familiar named Cetus: a force as unwavering and dynamic as the two that stood before him, whether or not that meant anything to Emet-Selch anymore.
