Biralba is a young dragonborn barbarian from the arctic region. Her past is a mystery to her, as she was orphaned as an infant and has no memory of her parents. At the time she was abandoned there, the region was experiencing a warm spell, a miracle that allowed her to be able to survive in the cold. She was taken in by a polar bear that had recently lost its cub and spent a lot of time exploring the arctic region and its complex network of caves as she grew up. She also started developing a close connection with many of the creatures that roamed the arctic—she would rescue them from traps and scare away hunters, her white scales allowing her to camouflage so that nobody could quite tell what she was. She earned a reputation as the “Birch Beast.”

Eventually, when she was about 10, she came across a group of traveling, pacifistic monks, and they were the first group she met that weren’t interested in needless violence, or violating nature’s resources. After a few days, they befriended Biralba and showed her they weren’t out to harm her, and she began accompanying them to her next destination while they taught her some words and language. She grew a little nervous as they reached Clearview, the nearby village, and she left them to stay on the outskirts, observing the village’s population. The village people mostly kept to themselves, but some of the children would occasionally venture out, and Biralba would secretly play with them. They taught her some things as well, and due to this, the village people tolerated her presence.

After about two years of living on the outskirts, some ambassadors from Glissyn, a nearby village, came to Clearview seeking better relations and more trade between them, with the goal of eventually forming an alliance to fight off some members of a third village (Hearthheart) who were edging into their territory, and sure to edge into Clearview’s next. Curious about how their ways differed, Biralba followed them, and quickly discovered most of the disrespectful travelers she’d dispatched over the years had originated from their village. In addition, Glissyn seemed to be the aggressors, not Hearthheart. Enraged, she single-handedly mounted an attack on their village. Glissyn called for reinforcements from Clearview, and when they arrived, they were surprised to see Biralba instigating—though they knew she was aloof and slightly intimidating, she had never hurt anyone from their village (and even had the know-how to patch up the children when they played too hard). The youngest soldier arriving from Clearview had actually been a child who’d played with her, and he was roughly able to understand the situation after talking with her. He relayed this to Clearview’s warriors, who cut ties with Glissyn and retreated with Biralba in tow. Grateful to her for ensuring they didn’t get mired in the conflict, they welcomed her into the village.

Dragonborn were not common around their parts, but a village elder had heard a little about their noble ways and culture, so they granted her the name Biralba, hoping that it was dignified enough. Living among the people helped assuage her temper and allow her to be more integrated into a human lifestyle, though her fierceness remained as she became a guardian of Clearview. She decided to nickname herself Birch as a testament to her old life. She is especially protective of nature and children, and as her barbarian powers grew, she began to channel the power of the polar bear into her fighting style.

Clearview and Glissyn continued to have many smaller-scale conflicts over the course of the next several years, which she and the village leaders attribute to the leadership of Rek, the new chieftain, who still remains very bitter about their first confrontation. Lately they’ve received word that Rek has taken a leave of absence, and they’re sure he’s up to no good. Thus, Biralba was tasked with tracking him down and keeping an eye on him should he be plotting something big against Clearview.
