About Gorgonopsids:

Gorgonopsids were the largest predators of the late Paleozoic, the era  just before dinosaurs. Though they had a somewhat mammalian appearance, their eyes were set at the sides of the head like those of a lizard, had pillar-like rear legs and ear bones. Gorgons are members of the Therapsida, one of the major groups of vertebrates. They shared a common descendant with reptiles, but were on an evolutionary line that gave rise to mammals rather than dinosaurs, lizards, turtles, and birds. Their brain is similar to modern reptiles rather than those of living mammals. Most species may have been predominantly active during the day though some could have been active at dawn or dusk or active at night. They are thought to have had binocular vision, a parietal eye (which detects sunlight and maintains circadian rhythm), a keen sense of smell, a functional "Jacobson's organ", and possibly a rudimentary eardrum.
