About

"A Boy Named Sue"

Personality:

John used to be a very fiery young man, but learned that was no way live if he wanted to make it long. Now he's wiser and more levelheaded, but has a grumpy disposition. He tends to hold onto his guilt and focus on his mistakes more than he should, so he comes of as self loathing at times.

He's not exactly the smartest in an academic sense but he's a good judge of character and quick thinking under pressure. Though he was raised on the other side of the law, he has a specific sense of morals, and will refuse to do anything he deems "truly rotten."

Appearance:

He's mistaken as mean at times do to his natural scowl. Has a weathered face and usually looks a bit tired. Doesn't shave very often, so regularly sports a bit of facial hair. His hair is wavy and dark brown, which he cuts himself. He's stout and broad, and naturally very strong. Eyes are a very bright sea green, and apparently his mother had the same color.

Clothing:

Dresses plainly. Always seen with his woolly coat, and a red neckerchief that doubles as a face cover. Prefers short sleeved button up shirts and jeans. Likes to switch out his boots a lot, for any he can find which fit. Also tends to lose his hat a lot, but his favorite hat is an ugly beige cattleman with a red band and red feather.

Backstory

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

To start, his dad was an aimless drunk and his mom died at childbirth. What a bummer. Luckily his dad's brother, uncle Beacon, was more than willing to take care of him. He had a cushy childhood, was even doted on, despite the man's line of "work." Beacon was a swindler who eventually was put on fire. Beacon then got together a gang and started doing more dangerous jobs. Life got harder, and when he was 15 he joined the gang and earned his place, despite being the gang leaders nephew.

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

From there he met Darry, who was apparently Beacon's best frontman. He avoided Darry and tried haplessly to get the attention of the guy's sister, Mae. His short temper n big mouth got him in a lot of trouble, so Darry ended up looking out for him on more than one occasion (to both of their annoyance). When Mae got engaged, so John officially gave up. After one drink to many, he stole a watch from a rival of Beacon's, and in a misunderstanding Darry took the blame. It ended in a house fire and Mae's engagement getting called off. It wasn't really John's fault, his actions had just tipped the iceberg of a long rivalry. He felt all the guilt for it though.

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

The gang had to cut ties and start traveling from there. It was many years of some honest and not so honest work. John matured a lot. He and Darry were kind of rivals and kind of friends, though it was mostly him refusing to accept any forgiveness. The "peace" was interrupted by one of Beacon's most ambitious ideas yet: an assassination disguised as train robbery. Supposedly going to set them for life, but it went wrong, leading to 3 members going missing including Darry. Of course John feels guilty all over again, but that quickly turns to anger when Beacon "informs" the remaining members that apparently Darry and Gila had sold them out. John offers to track them down and either kill them or trick them into coming back for justice.

⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆⋆

He eventually finds Darry further up North and confronts him. He's met with a new story, that Beacon had set Darry and the others up, in return for less heat and a payout from the city's politicians. He's offered a deal to John, travel with him for 6 months and collect the money they were supposed to get from the hit, but this time from bounties. When the times up, John could either try to kill him and take all the money, then more than likely take it back to Beacon, or split the money and go confront Beacon along with Darry. From there... It's history.

Relationships

Darry: "Conflicting"

Darry makes him feel part admiration, part frustration, and part fear. He cares about the man dearly but recognizes that he's a bad influence. Despite his bad ideas, John knows Darry is actually kinda smart. He refuses to accept that Darry has forgiven him for anything.

Mae: "Old Flame"

Nothing but platonic affection now. He had an embarrassing crush on her that dwindled when she got engaged. After  that, is history...

Beacon: "Losing Faith"

His uncle used to be his biggest role model, but theres been a steady loss of faith. When Darry and Gila went missing after the train job Beacon 's only made him more and more uneasy. Part of him wonders if his uncles going mad, or if he's always been that way.
