Desmond wasn't purchased. His 'owner' found him curled close to his deceased mother in a war-zone. His owner was doing recon on the area of a wealthy person's town home that had been attacked. He discovered Desmond as a baby and took him under his wing and instead of possibly selling or passing him off to a breeder found himself attached to the dreamy and kept him, raising him as his own. His owner treated him like a son, and taught him how to fight and do various things as well.
One day he accompanied his father to the ballet where he first espied Odette on stage. He was immediately smitten and his father teased him relentlessly.
He followed his owner into war-zones but the man constantly made Desmond stay back at the tents and base instead of fight. During an intense battle he disobeyed his father figure and stole a weapon making his way through the fighting. When he reached his father it was just in time to see another general cut him down. In a fit of rage he took up his father's great sword and cut the other man down and proceeded to lead a charge into the enemy taking them down with a decisive victory. He earned war-time honors as well as his freedom granted by the ruling government. Free to do whatever he wanted he took up post as an employed bodyguard for Odette.
Both emotionally scared and beaten they take comfort in each other and Desmond promises to protect Odette from ever being hurt again.
