Ryan comes off as mean thug that wants nothing to do with anyone, and that's how he likes it. He knows th best way to get people to treat him right is to act like he's about 5 seconds from punching them in the face. Ryan was a loner before he meet Sam. He would spend the day by himself then go and visit his grandmother after wards. Ryan's grandmother is the only real person he looks up to, and he seems to be the only one that seems to care about her in his family.

Ryan is a straight A student, and simple wants to finsh school so he can get a full time job, so he can move out of home. He wants to be able to remove his grandmother from the nursing home she is in, while she's old, she doesn't belong in there, but being unable to work anymore and no one in the family willing to house her, she has no choice.

When Ryan was chosen to help Sam out when he first got to the school, Ryan chucked it up to being becouse he had helped his grandfather a lot before he died, he happen to be blind as well. It didn't take long for Ryan to put it together that Sam haden't been blind for very long. He couldn't help but feel like he could relax a little around him, and talk clearly. Sam was shy at first but with in the first week the boy was a lot more confident and it was good to see. Ryan understood that while Sam was disabled he didn't like to be treated like he was, and boi did he let you have it when you got to soft to him. The more time the two spend together the more Ryan finds himself smiling more.
