Watane is nothing if not standoffish and cold. She knows how to keep up appearances, but she has little interest in small talk and is only willing to have friendly discussions if she thinks the connection will get her farther in her future plans. Despite her coldness, she's diligent at the very least, and easy to work with as long as you let her take the lead—something she hopes to god that the empire will look past her blood color to notice. Her nonstop hard work has given her a bit of a superiority complex, and she has grown distaste for those who complain about the system and aren't willing to "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" to fix their situation.
Ambition has been her core personality trait since day one. As a jade, she knew she was destined for the monotony of the caverns, but she always had her sights set on something greater. The definition of that "greater" something shifted over time, never really solidifying, but only one thing mattered: it didn't involve a cloister. When she was still bright-eyed, she wanted to have a future she was proud of, live a life doing something she enjoyed; but as she grew older, her goal became less "make a real difference doing something you love!" and more "get out of the caverns by any means necessary." Watane laser-focused so hard onto this goal that her work became her entire personality; she self-isolated and gave up her passions entirely, becoming somewhat of a shell of her former self. She calls her old hobbies and relationships a waste of time and grows uncomfortable when not doing something she deems productive. On rare occasions—usually when she's spent "too much" time with Kai—she misses having something more to... live for, for lack of a better phrase. But she quickly shuts down the idea as soon as it comes; she briefly tells herself she can always pick her old pasttimes back up later once she's in a stable situation off-planet, and then she drowns the thoughts out the only way she knows how: with more work. She's proud of her efforts, and she's convinced herself that everything she's doing is the best path forward, but her greatest fear—one that she refuses to acknowledge—is that all of her work will add up to nothing. And, as it turns out, all of her work was for nothing. Come SBURB, her worst nightmare is realized: all the effort she put into securing a desirable future was rendered completely useless upon the destruction of the world and the systems that worked within it. Sure, being one of the few trolls that survived and entered the game was probably a better fate than the caverns, but that fact did nothing to comfort her. It should be promising, given that they're destined to create a new universe, but she's struggling to convince herself that she's part of that plan; try as she might to move things forward, hardly anyone is inclined to listen to her since they have lasting grudges from the events of Pointe's game show. Not to mention that she was the only one in the session unable to godtier, which only fueled her lonely spiral. She's at her wits' end when Mattie expresses interest in her, with a pitying "I can fix her" attitude. Watane takes advantage of that with no hesitation, eventually becoming an abusive matesprit to feel like she has some semblance of control over something. Everything else feels like it's escaped her grasp, so she'll take what she can get. |
