He is a marine biology researcher at a prestigious university. 

He has a horrible potty mouth and reacts quite violently to people looking down on him due to a complex when he was bullied as a child. Irene was one of the only people to treat him kindly back then, so he regards her with fondness and love.

While out in the field he became half-swallowed by a large fish, he gets dragged out by Irene who was on the docks. Since he didn't have his glasses he didn't recognize her, and cussed her out. When he did recognize her, he apologizes sincerely and tries to court her.
