Vanta Blackblood

About

Vanta is a cornibet assassin working alongside his husband Festro Blackblood to acquire the powers of a wraith. He is unable to use magic and his primary combat abilities are dagger wielding and archery. He also specializes in alchemy, namely brewing poisons. Mischievous and wicked, he enjoys the finer things in life and is willing to get his hands dirty to get what he wants. He enjoys discussing the philosophy of death and the afterlife. Deep down, he has a wounded inner personality -- he feels neglected and yearns to be fulfilled, but he doesn't know how. Though he's not especially intelligent, he's very adaptive and able to read people well. Deception and trickery amuse him.

Background

Vanta grew up in an orphanage in a tiny village outside of Brightbarrow. Living in the orphanage, he was treated poorly and, in his late adolescence, was often on the receiving end of predatory behavior from those older than him. He developed a bitter and unfeeling persona as a way of dealing with the stresses of his life, choosing to spend his days isolated in the woods or attempting to intimidate others to feel dominant over them. He began to see the value in having power over others and attempted many times with no success to learn magic, which only frustrated him further.

When Vanta and Festro met, they were like kindred spirits. The two both held a similar hatred for their home village and the people in it, and generally were unsympathetic to others. They attempted to become more powerful together, with Festro quickly learning how to manipulate fire magic while Vanta taught himself physical combat skills. Vanta's inability to use magic made him harbor some resentment towards Festro, who made it seem effortless, but he put those feelings aside for the sake of his own self gain. When Festro used his abilities to help Vanta fend off a group of predatory adults, the two began to lower their guards around each other and sparked an intimately-close relationship, though neither of them were willing to call it love. They spent every day together, disregarding their duties and looking for excuses to pick fights with others.

After an incident which lead to the death of Festro's twin brother Hjern, the two were forced to separate. Festro left the village and joined the military using Hjern's identity, leaving Vanta isolated. This only perpetuated Vanta's bitterness towards the people around him, so much so that he eventually fled into the night. The next decade of Vanta's life would be shrouded in mystery, with little known about his whereabouts. He would reemerge from this shroud of secrecy as a famously skilled assassin. Even when asked, Vanta would never reveal any information about these years of his life, as it would not only threaten his business, but would also gain him enemies from the organization that trained him. He became such a prolific assassin that his services were extremely valuable, often used by wealthy nobles and crime organizations. The freedom and financial liberty of being an assassin allowed Vanta to drop his bitterness and overtime he developed a more sly, playfully wicked personality, as he loved what he did and felt free as a bird to pursue what interested him.

The two reunited when Vanta was hired to kill a businessman named Abbot S. Flockolder who was selling spellbooks to a crime organization. After approaching him from behind while Abbot was writing at his desk, Vanta was warned by the man that he had a fire spell surrounding his body, and that any touch to him would set Vanta on fire. The two had a conversation, both tense but attempting to be smug and casual in hopes that the other would relent, until eventually they realized who they were talking to: the assassin was Vanta, and the man under the alias of Abbot S. Flockolder was Festro Blackblood. Immediately the two reunited as if nothing had happened. They spent an evening at Blackblood Manor recounting their years separated, and were instantly hooked back onto each other. Recognizing and respecting each other's new abilities, the gears began to turn and the two started to scheme up a plan to take on ultimate power.

Festro Blackblood husband

Vanta's husband, partner in crime, and lifelong acquaintance. Despite neither of them having traditional romantic aspirations, they're kindred spirits who recognize their compatibility and use it to their benefit (though there are unspoken, genuine feelings between them that neither will address, too) through working as a pair. While Festro operates as the "brains" of their schemes, Vanta is utilized as a stealth operative and information gatherer. Vanta greatly enjoys pushing Festro's buttons and getting under his skin. Although he resents magic users, Vanta respects Festro's powers because he witnessed the extreme dedication it took to acquire them. Deep down, Vanta is content to be in any situation as long as Festro accompanies him.

Danihel Obsidalius child

Vanta and Festro's child, created when the two ascended and became wraithwives. Though he was never previously bothered by his inability to have children with Festro, Vanta is unexpectedly pleased with the idea of having a child of his own, though his intentions are moreso those of a manipulator rather than a caring parent. Vanta attempts to use coersion to win Danihel over, promising parental love and acceptance despite never intending to deliver upon them. He is not especially interested in or proud of Danihel's abilities or accomplishments, and actively looks down on their royal upbringing (possibly due to his own lack of comforts during adolescence). Danihel is very wary of Vanta, put off by his words that seem too good to be true.
