*huff* “ D-did I do good today...?

“ Yellow...? Please don't look at me like that- It’s my greatest dream to fall, at your side in battle! I would love nothing more than to be destroyed for your sake! I don’t mind the lunarians taking me if only- ”

BackgroundErionite had been dead-set on participating in patrols ever since they were young, despite their low hardness. Caving at last to Erionite’s persistence, Sensei determined that Yellow Sapphire would be the most capable gem to be able to carry out their work while still looking out for a fragile gem like Erionite. Erionite was extremely thrilled by his choice for their partner, as they’d always idolized them, but Yellow Sapphire did not share their junior’s enthusiasm. Yellow Sapphire never had a partner before- they were extremely self-reliant, and had already quietly proven that they didn’t need one long ago. On top of all their other responsibilities, this assignment could only be a hinderance… But despite their internal reluctance, Yellow Sapphire accepted the task without complaint as usual.

Their new routine took getting used to, as Yellow Sapphire had been forced to reduce their already-narrow resting schedule to accommodate dawn patrols with their new mentee, as earlier hours came with a lower risk of Lunarian attacks. Erionite struggled to overcome the gap in their strengths in the beginning, but with time, even Yellow Sapphire had to acknowledge their efforts- they were light on their feet, and trained this attribute until they were capable of keeping up with their partner even in heavy battle. Yellow Sapphire could have adapted easily to a life with this partner, if not for Erionite’s fatal flaw. Erionite dove to face any danger head-on with reckless abandon for their own body, against all that Yellow Sapphire tried to teach them of caution. With Lunarian attacks on the rise, Erionite couldn’t stand their slow progress as Yellow Sapphire attempted to help them find a way around their own fragility- they simply decided that they were content to be shattered day after day if need be, so long as they could be of use to Yellow sooner rather than later. This of course, still left Yellow to pick up the pieces behind them…

Swamped with ceaseless requests and jobs as they were, Yellow Sapphire was being driven to exhaustion making up for their partner’s lack of self-preservation too. Erionite grew more emboldened by the day, as their self-destructive methodology yielded results to their liking, and Yellow’s morale tanked with it. Every bundle of shards they turned in to Rutile at the end of a long day felt like a failure. While their peers expected no less an aftermath from looking after a gem like Erionite, this was the first time Yellow had ever been unsuccessful in carrying out a task they’d received. Day after day, watching Erionite destroy themself over and over, watching them smile after being put back together like some sort of martyr, as if the state their body returned in hadn’t been preventable… Eventually, Yellow Sapphire reached a breaking point of their own.

Kneeling over their partner’s remnants one eventful morning, separating every agonizingly hair-thin filament of crystal from blades of grass they’d been scattered in, Yellow spoke their mind for the first time ever. They told Erionite that they had no business doing this kind of work from the start. They had a lot of nerve walking around like they worked so hard every day, when all they ever did was get in Yellow Sapphire’s way- running all over the place while refusing to coordinate their attacks, butting into fights that their partner already had under control, and then getting themself shattered at the end of it, so that now Yellow had to finish the fight on their own and defend Erionite’s pieces from being collected by Lunarians. Not to mention the hours they would be forced to spend collecting those same pieces themself once the battle was won… Erionite tried to reassure their partner, letting it slip that their deepest desire was to be destroyed for the other gem's sake, but that certainly did them no favors. If anything, Yellow truly snapped after learning this- all hope of reconciliation might as well have been lost. Yellow told them that they were used to taking on any burden that came their way, because they were born with a capable body and that much was their obligation. But Erionite was a burden too impossible even for them. If they had a single shred of consideration for their peers whatsoever, they would be better off taking on a menial job somewhere far, far away from the outdoors, where no one else would have to clean up after them again.

In the days following, the two did not speak. Yellow Sapphire privately sought out Sensei to plead that their partner be reassigned. He was surprised by the request, and even more so by the unshakeable Yellow’s apparent defeat, but it was also the first time they’d ever asked anything of him- he made the necessary arrangements without prying further into the matter. Erionite was nothing short of devastated by the revelation that their partner viewed them as an obstacle- everything they’d done so far had been to live for Yellow’s sake or die trying, but the other gem wanted no ownership of their sacrifice at all. Wanted no ownership of them at all. Erionite felt very much like their world was ending. In a state of shock, Erionite resigned from patrolling altogether, even as Sensei volunteered a new pair of partners for them. Per Yellow’s last request, Erionite took up work that didn’t require them to leave the indoors. It was at this point that their feelings toward Yellow Sapphire took an even further turn for ‘obsession’ as all their interaction with the other gem was abruptly reduced to only being able to watch them from afar…
ETC• Fun fact! They are hella carcinogenic. The effects that fragments of their body have on admirabilis are not good…

Relationships

  • Ex-partners with Yellow Sapphire. They were always a little more than just a ‘fan’ of Yellow’s- during their time as partners, Erionite even entertained dreams of being destroyed for Yellow’s sake. Particularly after their split, however, Erionite’s feelings morphed into obsession and stalking behavior. When Yellow took up Phos’ offer to go to the moon and left their life on earth behind without hesitation, it felt like the greatest betrayal of all to Erionite- from the start, their understanding of the other gem was flawed. Ultimately, what was perceived by Erionite as a strong sense of duty was only Yellow Sapphire's resignation to catering the needs of others... Faced with freedom from their obligation to use their strong body to serve others, Yellow leapt at the chance to finally live for themself. In their absence, Erionite truly went off the deep end…
