Profile

( Outdated and desperately needs condensing, will be rewritten when I can wrangle my useless brain into producing words )

Lin can be something of an odd sight to the unwary, being perpetually surrounded by white orbs of flame and always found levitating at least a few inches above the ground. The latter is more or less involuntary; as a Wisp (a weak flame spirit), Lin is effectively weightless. While he can imitate standing or sitting on surfaces, without weight to distribute, it's really more difficult to achieve than it's worth. He is quite vulnerable to being knocked around by a strong wind, which has given him serious trouble in the past (and left him with a strong fear of storms) - as a result, he prefers to stay in places with plenty of things to anchor himself with. The flame orbs are something he consciously creates from his own energy. They are what allow him to see despite not having eyes; everything illuminated by the light they produce is visible to him. This does come with the drawback of being rather shortsighted, and as a person that originally had unidirectional vision, it can be terribly confusing to see in every direction at once. But Lin finds this far preferable to the blindness he experiences whenever the flames go out, as they do when he is too tired to sustain them. And hey, they let him see things that are invisible to everyone around him, so that's a plus, right?

Lin is a people-person and a nature-lover, very comfortable striking up conversations with complete strangers and preferring to spend most of his time outdoors. He's rather emotional and quite expressive, despite having half of his face covered at all times, and is always happy to make himself useful. Treat him well and he'll return the favor, but treat him poorly and you'll find out how quickly he can go from sweet to caustic. Though generally friendly, Lin can be awfully impish and sarcastic when he gets comfortable with someone; he greatly enjoys trading playful insults and sass, perhaps partially as a result of spending his formative years with a rather impudent decay spirit (who nicknamed him "rotten boy" for good reason). He's very fond of making his few friends sigh in exasperation. Lin can be rather talkative at times, which really is to say that he'll easily start babbling if he's not careful. He tries to be respectful of others' boundaries, and refuses to pry into matters that aren't his business, even if he feels he really should. He's very capable of reading people and does what he can to let people feel at ease around him. Unfortunately for him, Lin doesn't tend to stay aware of his surroundings or how close he is to them - this fairly frequently leads to him knocking things over while gesturing too broadly, or bashing his head into overhanging tree branches. He also has no sense of direction and is therefore chronically lost. Typically this doesn't bother him, but it would be a lie to say he doesn't get frustrated sometimes.

Lin carries a great deal of resentment and bitterness over the events that led him to become a Wisp, as well as the difference in the way strangers treat him as compared to when he was human. Despite his social nature, he doesn't trust easily and rarely grows genuinely attached to others, typically preferring to engage in shallow, short-lived interactions rather than actually make friends. He has a tendency to take things far too personally, and really isn't the most forgiving person around. Being highly emotional as he is makes him prone to overreaction and irrationality in the wrong circumstances, which he doesn't like to acknowledge.

At present, Lin spends his time traveling with Reruga, whom he happened upon by chance and was ultimately invited to join. Despite their numerous differences, the two find solace in each other's company, both being outcasts with their own personal demons hanging over them.

A Wisp is typically a transient spirit, existing for only a few weeks before fading out. The only thing that keeps Lin from going down this same path is the sealing spell woven into his blindfold, which keeps the fire in his soul restrained so that it doesn't destroy him from the inside. The blindfold is virtually impossible to remove, but if this seal were to be broken in some way, Lin would gradually lose his senses and consciousness before ultimately disappearing.

  • Left-handed.
  • His name is of Pavali origin, meaning "moth".
  • Has broken his left arm a total of three times, and every time was from falling out of a tree. Twice it was the same tree. And silly as it may be, it actually bothers him quite a bit that he can no longer fall out of trees since his forced transformation.
  • The charms on his blindfold, sash, and bracelets were given to him to help him orient himself in case he can't see. Without a proper landmark, he struggles to tell which way is down, which makes it next to impossible to navigate back to the ground if he happens to get thrown into the sky. The charms let him feel which way is down.
  • His eyes were a vibrant sapphire blue. There's nothing but fire in his eye sockets now.
  • He can sew! And is actually pretty good at it! He's shyly proud of it, since he feels his practical skills are a bit limited.
  • Has pretty much encyclopedic knowledge of mushrooms and other fungi (ones native to his area, at least). His most prized possession when he was younger was a field guide about fungi, and he has it effectively memorized.
  • Used to have a very good sense of direction, and could even do a little star navigation. But now he can't see the stars, and has a hard time figuring out where he is in general.
  • Leans vegetarian, not for moral reasons but because he's not fond of meat. He prefers fruits and vegetables, particularly peaches and spinach leaves.
  • Can't sleep outside. At least, not for more than an hour or two at a time. Without walls around him, he just can't relax. If he must, he sleeps with a tether, but it's a poor solution. Fortunate, perhaps, that he doesn't physically need sleep - it helps with mental and emotional stability, though.
  • (Uncertain) May have had deuteranomaly prior to losing classic vision.
