about:

emmett is a 42 year old physicist working in london, and the legal  guardian of his beloved nephew, laurence. emmett's official job  description is working as a researcher with his partner and assistant,  zarra, by looking into various "anomalies" in physics (supernatural  phenomena) and trying to define what might be happening.  aside from his job and caring for laurence, emmett enjoys cooking, baking and strange indie arthouse films. he's currently in a relationship of two years with his current boyfriend, archie. 

by the time part 1 of DQ starts (sept. 2014), he's seeing a neurologist due to seizures and headaches he's been having. he's pretty sure it's epilepsy (hint: it's not epilepsy)

emmett is generally comes across as a quiet and reserved person, if a bit prickly at times. he's very kind to people he likes, but this belies the lack of respect he can have for others (or rather- he's only being nice because he wants to be, or it serves a purpose.). he's quite skilled at reading people and adapts accordingly, which can obscure his "true" personality. although he has quite a manipulative streak, he's not overtly cruel unless he a) has a reason to, however silly, and b) thinks he won't experience repercussions. unfortunately his boyfriend fills the criteria better than anyone he's ever known, and has to bear the brunt of his fits (which seem to be getting rapidly worse).

he generally prefers building relationships/associating with timid people, or someone who views him as an authority figure. deep down emmett is aware he's at best a bitter and deeply insecure person, but he doesn't want to put in the work to fix it. he's aware of his own actions enough to hate himself for it, but not enough to truly drive change.

background:

by no means comprehensive, this is missing major spoilers, sensitive subjects, and anything more complex than a short paragraph.

the first born son of a property magnate, born sometime in june 1972. his family moved to london shortly before his sister, jackie, was born in 1979, divorcing soon after. he lived in a toxic and neglectful home environment with his sister and mother, caring for jackie as much as he could until he left for university. it takes less than a year for her to show up on his doorstep, demanding to live with him instead.

during his masters, he's approached by a philanthropist who is looking for a physicist who could assist his organisation with some research. he introduces himself as dr rahman, explaining that a strange creature has been spotted in the english channel just south of dorset, creating sounds that make people in the vicinity ill. he argues that emmett, being hard of hearing and a swimmer, is a perfect candidate for the team. emmett agrees, and has been working for dr rahman since. 

in 2012 he takes on a new assistant, a PhD student named zarra hussein, on a personal recommendation from dr rahman himself. the main project they work on together is investigating anomalies linked to a young child, a 3 year old who zarra decides to name aamira and take primary care of. it's during this period he meets and befriends archie, zarra's oldest and best friend. not long after they start dating (much to zarra's discomfort), although it's only after that emmett realizes that archie is dr rahman's son.

when the main story starts in autumn 2014, he's doing much of the same thing, but some of his unresolved issues and health troubles are about to come to a head.
