As the Winter Solider, he was under the control of HYDRA for centuries, they kept him in cryo for the majority of it, bringing him out for strategic assassinations as before. After the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D, and HYDRA’s takeover, they remained mostly in the shadows, controlling things, triggering world events. When the Earth was becoming uninhabitable, and people started to evacuate the planet, HYDRA had their own plans to conquer the stars, they took The Winter Soldier with them into space, and he remained under their control until 2327, when a ship carrying the frozen, but alive, body of Captain America was found and Steve being thawed.

Learning of the Captain’s survival, HYDRA sent The Winter Solider to kill Steve, but Steve along with a former UC ‘pilot’ and a few agents of the now rebuilt S.H.I.E.L.D, were able to destroy HYDRA and Steve freed Bucky. With no memory of his former self, Bucky fled the area, eventually stealing a Va'ruun Litany during a run in with Va'ruun Zealots and leaving Steve behind (after making sure Steve was alive).

After a three years of being in hiding, Steve manages to find Bucky on an out of the way planet on the edge of the settled systems. Steve was not the only one to find him, however, and during a fight with bounty hunters, Bucky’s metal arm from HYDRA was destroyed. Steve took Bucky to The New S.H.I.E.L.D who created Bucky's current arm. Director Hall informs Steve and Bucky that a few HYDRA agents survived and are scattered across the Settled Systems and with the help of Agent Zdana and former UC "pilot" Sam Wilson, set out to track down the last remnants of HYDRA.

Bucky, now, with the Winter Soldier name reclaimed, travels the settled systems hunted by bounty hunters, occasionally teaming up with Steve whenever they happen to cross paths.
