NOTE : Rai is extremely bad at expressing his emotions in any way other than through fighting. And in fact, he’s never had any reason to do it any other way, since he doesn’t really care about the opinions of people who aren’t important to him. But with those he cares about… well, they say he’s actually really cute.

Rai never knew where he was born or how he ended up here. The only thing he knows for sure is that he doesn't belong in this place.

Everything about him was special, but that hardly worked in his favor. Wolves never abandon their cubs. What’s more, Shadowborn are a rather rare breed, you’d hardly find any outside the tribe. To many, this was a bad omen, which made Rai seem like a threat in the eyes of others.

Dealing with the Shadows is not something a child can handle on their own. The Shadowborn keep their secrets to themselves, so few outside the tribe know anything about their nature. No one could help Rai with what was inside him.

The fact that Rai had been adopted by the Temple Guardians made him stand out too much, which led to a lot of jealousy and unfair judgments.

On top of everything else, Rai always felt a gaping void inside him. No matter how hard he tried, no matter how many connections he had, no matter how skilled he had become at wielding his power… none of that mattered. The feeling that he was incomplete was his constant companion.

Even though he had already chosen his path and was walking it with confidence, the void had never been filled.

But a single coincidence broke the deadlock…

NOTE : Rai's markings aren't tattoos, they're his magic. They spread as he grew up and later, when he met Khay. The marks can change shape or seem to move, but usually they just shimmer depending on Rai's condition.

For the Shadowborn, and Umbravari in particular, shadows are not merely a phenomenon - they are part of their very being. That is why an Umbravari’s weapon is an extension of themselves, unique to each one. The New Moon, Rai’s current scythe, is an incomplete version of its true form.
