Morwen Redwake was born beneath a bruised sky in a silt-choked port where the salt smelled of old blood and bargains. Other children called him devil-blood before they learned to call him captain. He learned to pick pockets before he could tie a proper knot, trading stolen bread for lessons in cartography and the subtle science of reading tides. The sea took his father and left a debt with a cruel broker; Morwen repaid it the only way he knew how—by stealing the ledger and every coin it counted. His deft fingers and quicker wit won him the trust of a motley crew of deserters, smugglers, and runaway noble pages, and by the time he was old enough for a beard he had his own vessel patched together from the bones of wrecks and the favors of cutthroats.

Now Captain Redwake commands the wraith-sloop Night's Penance, a low-slung silhouette that slips through harbor mists like a rumor. He moves through ports as easily as a tide, always with a roguish grin and a plan sharper than a boarding hook, negotiating favors with a blade hidden in a boot and secrets traded for rum. He keeps a small book of names—credits to collect, debts to settle—and a sea-worn compass that never points north but always points toward opportunity or ruin, depending on how you look at it.
