"I just want a change of pace."

Shy, fumbling and of mixed blood, they traced the steps of their Estran family's line of jewellers and goldsmiths – yet much of the mercantile aspects was not for them. Slowly piecing together what they strive to do in life with their creative skills, the consequences of war on their family finally pushed them from their comfort zone's peace to take action for others.

Personality

Eager|| Doting || Cooperative || Shy || Awkward || Obtuse || Ruminant ||

At a glance Inis is a bumbling dolt– short, gangly, and stuttering with a perpetual hesitance about their demeanor. And that is most certainly a good half of them; the other half, while upfront reserved and evasive they pay a keen ear to others' wishes, with mindful hands they work to deliver what is asked of them. But they process things slowly, be it flavours or questions or sensitive situations. Without time to fully understand they panic– and Inis can often be so perplexed that even they wouldn't deny they live a measure well behind other elves, let alone humans.
While this odd elf is hardly one to do well in interactions or dire circumstances, what they excel at lies not in eloquence, or shrewdness, or remarkable physical feats – but in an objective consideration and quiet willingness to provide for the sake of others.

Ailbhennis' mother Karlena hails from an Estran line of goldsmiths, and father Dominiel a dark elven cleric travelling throughout Koben. While the youthful union was unlikely in both family's eyes, Inis was nevertheless welcomed from the maternal side when it happened.

Estraude Childhood [1-50's]

Growing up with relations in Estraude brought more benefits than a nomadic life and Inis' father resumed his travels alone. The Malaiynur family goldsmiths and jewellers had a comfortable living and cultivated their children as artisans and entrepreneurs; Inis, though odd-hued and tongue-tied, was greeted with the same expectations as their cousins.

It was when Inis grew more self-aware that they realized their great-grandfolks of the kingdom-minded kin and the offhand neighbours were especially partial to gossip and furtive frowns. Their mother told them not to mind it– her choice of husband was no affair of theirs– but all the same her child developed self-conscious and fretful. Never one to have inherited mother's silver tongue nor their father's gilded smiles, the young elf took to the art of crafting metals for expression instead, preferring to make their presence scarce with apprenticeships.

[Worldly travels, 50s-120's]

By their 50th year Inis' mother arranged an extended business run through Linhythe together to see her husband. On this first trip out-of-state Inis learned well about their craft, but also that prejudices were strangely expansive... not all in confrontation, but through watching others and exploring knowledge long neglected in disinterest. Their eyes to the world opened as the whole family toured the coastlines briefly and soon afterwards mother and child departed for the Kingdom. Inis documented their times abroad with paintings and stayed behind in Amedra when Karlena returned to Estraude.

What Inis hadn't accounted for in studying their craft on those shores was how terribly inept they were– and remained– with social cues and networking. After several years struggling they finally returned to Estraude, less experienced in the occupation or new art forms than as hoped. Relying heavily again on family connections Ailbhennis honed their work in different companies, slow and unambitious but following others' methods. Like this the young craftsman grew acquainted with several masters, one of whom introduced them to an entirely different trade.

[Vox, 130's-180's]

A man with a penchant for writing and collections, this old master had mostly left the hands-on finesse of goldsmithing and imbuing to others while he took up its more academic aspects. Seeing a bit of his own past self in the runty Ailbhennis, Master Esiwold introduced the student to what he knew of his guild--and what his profession otherwise provided. As if rediscovering the world once again with a different lens, Inis latched on to these new notions as it felt wholly unlike their own family's expectations. This history, this sort of imprint, this sort of art... this was something they could do too with diligence, and it didn't deal with agonizing over persuasive sales or winning smiles or attempted masterpieces failing expectations.

Though tentative and short in each duration, the guild's purpose was what drove Inis to visit their father more often in these years and expand their horizons on other shores occasionally. Perhaps what fascinated them the most about the world was how many paces there were to live by, and how stories moved on so quickly compared to their Estran home.

Current:

Though far removed from the conflict between the other continents, the neutrality of the Estran State had Inis vaguely concerned for their father and export-wise, and also guild-wise, as communications with the Koben continent had became scarce. As the political landscape shifted ever so quickly with the alliances and new war fronts, Inis only became aware of what tolls such news could take on the psyche when they witnessed their mother's haphazard plans to find her missing husband. Having dissuaded Karlena to remain in Estraude for now and keep to their contacts, and as hapless as they were when it came to travel themself, Inis contented to practise their magic with the slowest fervour ever in the hopes of creating wares that had use beyond art.

Worry was no stranger to them; they incessantly, needlessly worried about most anything and everything on a daily basis. But the dawning realisation that they may never actually find resolutions to what they wanted – one year was not a long time, but what if it became infinite?– and the fact that others were moving on so quickly was a thought Inis grappled with for the better of the new year. Coins! This will be the year they... do something! Whatever it is.

They'll start with getting past twenty words in a row.

Additional Info

  • Blossoming characteristics: black sclera, nails and spotted tongue. Thanks darkie blood. They terrify themself
  • Really, really, really doesn't prefer talking; awkwardly prone to stammering when they think faster than they can speak. Big on gestures and occasionally writing or drawing their intent out instead.
  • Ailbhennis is pronounced as 'alv-ennis' and is most definitely a result of the parents unable to settle on a single name. They'd more often introduce themself as 'Inis' however.
  • Headwear's something they made themself, which their mother enchanted with a glamour.
  • Likes red meat! And colourful baubles. And adores painting pet portraits...!
  • Inis has always used their magic more for subtle parts of the smithing processes and aesthetic uses; they've shied from the more complex matters to incorporate meaningfully in their works, much to the consistent dismay of their magic-oriented masters and several family members. With recent affairs however and especially Master Esiwold's insistence, Inis has attempted to set aside the self-consciousness about these setbacks and put more effort into application rather than just reading– hopefully, at least.
  • Tattoos on hands to help spell-casting, courtesy of the Pusparnas [inis tats ref by kishi]
  • Has adopted Esiwold's goldfish as their own. They became too attached. (Thank you for helping make friends,...)

Relationships

(BG) Karlena Malaiynur [ family ]

[270] - Mother and enchanter. Wanted to be a travelling actress rather than a jeweller when she was younger. In the end she abandoned that dream when she met Dominiel and fell into an unlikely but time-tested relationship; she saw value in giving her child a stable foundation with the family. Extroverted, subtly protective and gifted with a charm all performers were ought to have--that unfortunately her kid never picked up from her.

(BG) Dominiel Oileán [ family ]

[279] - Father and cleric. A dark elf from Iadlain who opted to make love not war see the world for himself and service his abilities in his own way. Estranged from his family for his wife, he goes to great lengths to avoid his relatives whenever he secretly returns to his hometown. Also very extroverted, also very easy-going if a rare influence in Inis' life. Good handler of money; if he weren't so pure-intentioned he could have been a suspect swindler with that look of his... unless he actually is. Inis doesn't know.

(BG) Master Esiwold Nam [ mentor ]

Wizard and a goldsmith whose property doubles as a safehouse for fellow Vox guildmembers. Using and passing on his knowledge of studied smithing and artificer techniques, his profession provides the members with imbued crafts and checking over the validity or historical techniques of items brought before him.

Karan Narayan [ artisan peer ]

friend who they totally would have loved to meet with a little less awkwardness on their end... but met through his artisan family, as he travels around lots.

Atticus Leland [ model, penpal ]

A young wood elf that caught Inis' eye much like how he catches everyone's, really, but fascinated by his plant growth, Inis dawdled around before working up the nerve (with Kam's help) to talk to him at last. The boy had a busy schedule, but still made time for art and dorky artists' company.

Qiu Yue Ling [ penpal ]

A Songluan girl they met during the days of the Emerald Masquerade, bonding over art and crafts and then becoming penpals once distance stepped between them again. Super exciting! But recent events have been worrisome, and hampering on their communications...
