Personality

Aref is, above all else, an introvert who prefers a logical approach to life.

He came into existence not long after the library he guards was built; however, he is unconcerned with things such as his personal history and has not kept track of his own lifespan thus far. He feels compelled to maintain order and tradition within the library. This rarely involves him interacting with whoever the current residents of the castle may be as he will not proactively seek them out and most humans incorrectly assume the library to be maintained by the castle's servants.

In spite of his avoidance of them, he does posess a deep fondness for humans. If one seeks out his attention, he patiently and kindly offers it all of the knowledge available to him. He does seem to view them more as pets than equals, however; this is likely due to their limited lifespan. One of his favorite pasttimes is to immortalize his darling pets in story.

The Poet's Delay

In vain I see the morning rise,
In vain observe the western blaze,
Who idly look to other skies,
Expecting life by other ways.

Amidst such boundless wealth without,
I only still am poor within,
The birds have sung their summer out,
But still my spring does not begin.

Shall I then wait the autumn wind,
Compelled to seek a milder day,
And leave no curious nest behind,
No woods still echoing to my lay?
- Henry David Thoreau

Library

The castle rests in the mountains - easy to see, but difficult to approach. Enduring the journey into the mountains rewards the traveler with a close-up view of an elegant castle that seems to be frozen in time and its sprawling gardens that are inexplicably tended despite the castle having been abandoned for years. It is surrounded by a moat but it has no walls; its location is sufficient enough protection from invaders.

Upon walking through the front doors which are always kept unlocked, a visitor finds themself immediately in an expansive reading room. Indeed, the entire first floor of the castle appears to be a library. Shelves made of the same stone that the castle is adorn every inch of the walls and are overflowing with books and scrolls. Exquisite couches and chairs are placed in the center of each room, and a soft candlelight is ever present.

A trapdoor in the first room reveals a set of stairs that descend to what appears to have once been a kitchen and servant's quarters. Though all items within are in pristine condition, the lack of food found within makes it fully apparent that no one lives here. The only item that isn't standard furnishings in this area is a locked journal that rests on the bed in the servant's quarters.

A staircase in the very back of the castle leads to the second floor, which contains several sleeping chambers. All of them lack any personal belongings, but they are well furnished.

The rumors say that a visitor to the castle finds themselves greeted by a ghostly vision and escorted to a chamber of their choosing - the only price for safe lodging is a promise to partake of the knowledge found within the castle walls.

Fabian D'Este

[ friend ]

A quiet man who visits with Soare on occassion. Aref can tell that Fabian is less concerned with expanding his knowledge than his lover is; however, Aref appreciates how respectful Fabian is of their passions for knowledge. He also appreciates that Fabian tends to take his side whenever he and Soare begin arguing about making the library more accessible.

Cadence

[ friend ]

A vampire that comes to visit from time to time. Both her and her spirit companion, Cret, seem to have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge. Cadence brings him stories of the outside world and new information for the library shelves in exchange for looks at his oldest texts.

Soare Morningstar

[ friend ]

Aref and Soare were enemies when they first met a couple of centuries ago, but they have come to be friends. Soare is still loyal to his fellow mages, so they will sometimes clash regarding the location of the library, which is warded so as to make it difficult to enter if you are a mage. Aref is fond of Soare as long as the mage continues to respect Aref's wishes.
