Zhasel is an agent for a secret society/intelligence agency known as the Band of Immaculates. After a mission gone wrong, she was badly injured, and was subject to a highly experimental treatment which saw much of her body, including her vocal cords, replaced with enchanted machinery. To the surprise of the surgeons and engineers, her body responded well to the prosthetics, and she made an unusually rapid recovery.
Her brief brush with death ultimately did little to stop her from fulfilling her duties, and she eventually came to be known among the Band’s acolytes as the Lady of Brass, renowned for her efficiency in the field as well as her (slightly cynical) wit.
