Likes

  • Music. Listening to, playing, and writing it all give him great comfort even in dire circumstances. He often writes music to cope with difficult situations.
  • Campfires. They've become a symbol of safety to him.
  • Stew, mashed potatoes, and other hearty comfort foods. Both filling and comforting, they've become his go to.
  • People respecting his boundaries. If people respect his, he'll respect theirs. He tends to like people who don't stick their nose into his business better from the get go.
  • Coffee. It helps keep him going and avoid sleeping as long as possible. He also enjoys warm milk quite a lot, but only has it if he really needs to destress as it tends to make him sleepy.
  • Cinnamon rolls, pumpkin bread, and other baked goods. He especially enjoys ones with cinnamon tastes.
  • Competition. He loves the thrill of competing, as well as the excitement of winning. He'll challenge people to rematches without fail if he winds up losing.
  • Cafes. Despite usually wanting to avoid more busy places, cafes tend to carry food and drinks he greatly enjoys and he risks the crowd to have some tasty food and warm shelter for a bit. You may get lucky and catch him in a rare good mood when he's visiting one.
  • Nature. Due to how long he's been traveling and how trapped inside he was previously in his life, nature has become a new home to him. Even when things are rough, he can appreciate the little things in the world around him such as the swaying trees, colorful sunset, and twinkling stars.
  • Crisp, cool Autumn days. The ideal weather in his opinion, perfect for sitting outside near a fire and looking at the colorful leaves on the trees.
  • Loose, comfortable clothing. He doesn't like dressing up or wearing tight-fitting clothes. They make him feel exposed and embarassed, regardless of how covered he is.

Dislikes

  • Nosey people. Strangers and acquaintances who try worming their way into his business will quickly be snapped at and shoved away.
  • People forcing their help onto him. Despite how down on his luck he always seems to be, Faust doesn't enjoy people helping him, especially without his agreement. He can handle himself and doesn't want pity.
  • Supernatural forces such as ghosts and demons. Due to his trauma in the past, he's absolutely terrified of them and will panic if he believes one is coming for him.
  • Storms, be them rain or snow. They make it exceedingly difficult to camp outside safetly, and often force him to take shelter at an inn and stay the night. Snow in general, while he finds it beautiful, can make things difficult for him. Rainstorms also tend to remind him of the night he lost his eye if he doesn't have a distraction and is left to his own thoughts.
  • His scars. They're physical reminders of the difficulties he's faced, as well as a sign to others about how rough his life has been. He keeps them covered as well as he can to prevent questions, and to avoid seeing them himself.
  • Nightmares. His dreams are constantly plagued by terrifying visions, causing him to stay awake as much as he can.
  • Super hot summer days. Seeing as he likes to stay as covered as possible with clothing, he tends to get very overheated and sweaty and is too stubborn and self conscious to wear cooler clothing.

Personality

Forlorn outsider

Faust is exceedingly antisocial most of the time, and will push others away if they try to get close. However, from a distance, he will often look somewhat depressed and lonely, looking as though he requires company. Which is, in fact, true. Faust actually thrives when he's surrounded by love and friends. But he's been betrayed and hurt so many times in the past, he rejects any advances.

Creative coping

Faust is extremely creative, getting his thoughts and feeling out through writing poetry and music, and occasionally sketching the scenary around him. These things are very personal to him, and as such he will keep the majority of them hidden away. If you're lucky enough for him to play music for you, it will most likely be covers of other songs rather than his own. His sketches are the least private thing, as they tend to just be drawings of nature and thus have nothing to hide other than his own self conciousness in his artistic ability.

Locked-away treasure

Those who somehow manage to worm their way into Faust's heart will find he's actually a loving, protective individual. He cares deeply about his friends and will come to see them as family over time. He'll go out of his way to help those he's close to, even at risk of his own well being. He has a soft inside hidden under that spiky exterior he's built up over the years, and those that are lucky enough to find it will find themselves with a very dependable lifelong friend.

Due to their easy portability, he has become well practiced in throwing knives for self defense.

Archery

While he's worse at it after losing his eye and he hasn't practiced in a while, he is naturally talented with bows and arrows.

Survival

Skilled at setting up traps, tracking animals, foraging materials and food, reading the time and weather, and creating makeshift shelter due to his years of traveling.

Agility

Quick on his feet both when running and dodging. However, this can be dampened when he hasn't slept in a while and has slower reaction time.

History

Severly outdated! Needs updating! Don't take any of this to mind!

Unwanted child

When Faust was born, he was blessed with bad luck from the get go. With complications arising during the birth, his mother gave her life in order to save him. A decision her husband did not at all agree with. Despite resenting the child from the moment he came out of the womb, he tried to care for him. After all, it was his wife's dying wish. He wanted to make sure her death wasn't in vain. However, his resetnment grew as time went on. The child looked too much like his wife. A constant reminder of who he had replaced. It didn't take long for him to have had enough of the child. Not wanting to spend the money to give him over to the local orphanage, he instead sold the young boy to an underground band of thieves for a good sum of cash and vanished into the night.

Young thief

Having been sold to the thieves at the young age of 4 years, Faust was raised to steal from others as soon as he could handle the task. He was treated cruelly by the high-standing masters of the organization, along with the other unlucky children who were stuck there by various means. Trapped with nowhere else to go, he soon became accustomed to this life. He did what he was told so no one would get hurt. Many of the children there were hot-headed themselves as it was the only way to get by in that environmnet. Faust would often get into fights with the other kids, some of which resulted in permanent scars. However, he did have two saving graces. A father figure named Kliff who served as his mentor in thieving as well as music, and a girl he befriended named Lily.

While many other friends Faust managed to make there betrayed him in due time, Lily was different. She and Faust quickly came to see eachother as siblings, and Faust would defend her against anyone who tried to pick on her. She helped him see a bit of light in the dark world he was stuck in as they supported eachother through thick and thin. Lily was too frail to do work as a thief herself, and as such she worked in the organization's hideout doing chores such as cooking and cleaning. Faust would often help her do her duties if he could. Once they reached their early teens, they created escape plans with hopes to leave together one day. They never actually attempted any in fear of punishment.

Kliff was given the task of training young Faust in the ways of thievery and combat as soon as he was old enough. The only adult who was ever kind to him among the group, Faust soon came to see him as a father figure and often went to Kliff to seek life advice. Kliff introduced Faust to the beauty of music, teaching him how to play guitar and to sing whenever no one else was around to see. Those music lessons were one of Faust's few times of rest and safety, and music soon became a thing of comfort to him. Kliff gave Faust his very own guitar when he turned 13, which Faust defended with his life against the other children. Kliff also taught Faust how to read and write. Faust soon turned this into another hobby in the form of poetry and journaling. Due to the other creative outlets being so enjoyable, he soon started sketching with pencils as well.

When Faust was 15, Kliff vanished from his life. Simply stopped coming home to the hideout. Faust would wait for him to return day in and day out to no avail. Eventually, he gave up on his wait and was assigned a new mentor who he never even bothered to memorize the name of. To this day Faust does not know what happened to Kliff, but he's convinced that Kliff abandoned him to escape the band of thieves alone and Faust continues to hold that feeling of betrayal in his heart. However, the arts continue to be a comfort to him.

An eye for an eye

At age 18, Faust was given his first dangerous mission. A precious artifact from a graveyard rumored to be haunted. Lily urged him to ask the group's head to assign him a different mission, but Faust refused. Not beliving in the supernatural, he promised Lily this was the least dangerous mission he could possibly get for his test to step up in rank in the band of thieves. Leaving the hideout, he promised her he would come back safely and didn't look back upon walking out the door with the rest of the group.

Upon arriving at the graveyard, there was a shroud of dark clouds and heavy rain. Thunder rumbled, and lightening crashed. Perfect weather for the task at hand, in Faust's opinion. Much easier to sneak in and out under the darkness and noise. Leaving the group behind to go do his task, Faust swiftly found his target. A medium sized orb, placed upon a pedestal in the middle of the burial site. Easy peasy. There wasn't even a guard to be seen anywhere in this place. He snatched the orb and placed in it his pack and turned to leave, only to find himself frozen in place. A cold chill ran down his spine as he was engulfed in pure, shadowy darkness. Whispering in his ear, a voice that sounded like many joined into one spoke to him. "To dare defile the relic that watches over us in our slumber... requires utmost punishment. An eye for an eye, thief."

Searing pain shot through the boy's head. A bright light. A shriek. A struggle. Followed by even more darkness.

Faust came to with one less eye to his name. He no longer felt pain, and he saw no blood. His eye was simply gone, an empty socket with no injury left behind other than a searing headache. Dizzy and terrified, Faust sat up to look around him as he tried to control his breathing. Passed out bodies. The entire group faced fates similar to him, it seemed, though less severe. Passed out... no one to watch him. He could escape. He could finally be free from this hell of a life he's been living. With a rush of adrenaline, Faust rose up onto his feet. Despite being dizzy and winded, he took off with no specific direction in mind. Upon finding a freight train station after seemingly hours of running and walking, he quickly climbed onto an open car to take him wherever fate may decide. Leaning against the wall, he breathed a sigh of brief relief before his reality smacked him across the face. His eye. He'd lost an eye. Did he really lose an eye? Hunching over and putting a hand up to his face, he felt the gaping hole in his head. His whole body trembled as he made his way over to a reflective surface. With labored breathing, he stared back at himself. It's gone. It's empty. It's- feeling sick to his stomach, he clammered to the side and got ill out of the moving train car, losing precious nutrients he really could have made better use of. And Lily... he'd left her behind. Abandoned her like so many have already done to him. So many. And now... he's no better.

Current day

3 years have passed since then, all of them plagued with sleepless nights haunted by nightmares. Faust has never settled down in one place for too long in fear of being found by the band of thieves, sure that they must be searching for him. As well as fear of forming bonds. He has securely locked his heart shut tight, to protect both himself and others. Living in a tent and surviving off of what nature has to offer whenever he can. Never staying still. A lonely vagabond.

Summary

A lonely traveler running from his past, both literally and figuratively. Skilled at survival and living most his days in a tent in the woods, he tends to avoid populated areas. He's closed off and antisocial, but has a very caring heart for those who can make it past his walled off exterior.

Trivia

thoughts_2_by_meklee_de5uj5r-pre.jpg?tok

Faust was not the name he was given at birth. He changed it upon escaping the band of thieves in order to stay hidden better, and hasn't used his old one since. He no longer sees it as his name. He's left it in the past. Now, he is simply Faust.

Saw a doctor not long after losing his eye that mysteriously treated him for free. He got a plain black sphere to fill the gap in his head, but still keeps it covered at all times. The sphere is simply there to keep medical problems from arising.

Really doesn't have much money to his name, and as such uses it as sparingly as he can to save it in cases of emergency. What money he does have, he gets by selling meat and pelts from hunting.

Has retained his skills as a thief over the years, but hasn't put them to use since he escaped. He refuses to steal from anyone ever again, and looks negatively upon those who do it of their own free choice.

It took him a long while to get used to maneuvering around the world after losing his eye.

Loves animals despite commonly needing to hunt them for food and greatly enjoying meat. He tries to use every part of any animal he kills, including the bones.

His handwriting is extremely messy, but legible to those who get used to it.

He destroyed the guitar Kliff gave him after Kliff's disappearence. He started to regret that decision a few months later, and that regret has only grown over the years despite still harboring that feeling of betrayal and abandonment.
