Background:

Being born the eldest daughter of the house with two younger siblings, Shion held the most responsibilities between the three especially because her parents were not worthy to be deemed as guardians to them after a few years into Shion's life. She was practically the mother figure of her siblings because of the lack of attention her mother gave to the kids, forcing her to grow up faster than necessary. Instead of playing around or hanging out with others after school like everyone else, all she did was homework, housework, and minor part-times to take care of Toshiro and Ena. Their parents never really took care of them and allowed them to do whatever they wanted after being able to raise Shion until she was nine. After that, they were never looked at again. In fact, Shion did all the cooking at home while her parents went out to eat separately from each other and the kids, knowing well that they never actually wanted their kids in the first place. In fact, they only took care of Shion for nine years and her sibling who were a year apart from each other because her grandparents insisted they should, thinking that having a few kids would lead to a happier life between the two after marriage. It had rather an opposite effect and broke their relationship further since having children was just stressful and they were already arguing about their life decisions with one adult showing his lazy and inconsiderate side and the other showing that she was very strict about many things towards the other. It was known between her and her younger brother and sister that her father was slowly becoming mentally distorted from his own emotions, reality, and even fantasy as time passed every time he communicated with his wife. This situation caused the kids to distant themselves from him and their mother further to stay safe in case he was to do anything to them if he lashed out in some sort of frenzy dealing with the parents' problems against each other. Not only did Shion believe that she and her siblings were the cause of their mental break downs and pointless arguments, she also noticed at a young age that her parents weren't very close to each other. They were quite unhappy with one another for some time and never did anything to help mediate the problem besides having children upon the elders' suggestion. Even after having their kids and trying to bond from them, they gave up and did their own things thus leaving the kids to take care of themselves. Rather than tossing them out of the house, they kept them to keep not only the house clean and work-free but also the mouths of the grandparents shut if they were to disappear without a word. Shion's father quickly became an alcoholic to relieve his distress from reality while her mother didn't care about what he did and worked for herself. It wasn't until the man had enough of his wife's abusively arrogant behavior and went ahead and committed a double suicide-- taking his wife's life along with his own when the children were gone for school. There were discovered by none other than Shion when they came back who quickly kept the younger siblings away and called for emergency services.

After the deaths of their parents were decided to be a suicide, the kids were either to go to their relatives' care or to an orphanage. Unfortunately, their relatives either couldn't take three children in their care because that would raise their financial bills making it more than expensive for them or because their house is too small due to having children other own thus deciding that the kids would have to be sent to an orphanage in hopes of letting them have a possibly loving family. This decision their relatives made for them rubbed Shion the wrong way and sounded that they just didn't want the kids around them because they would get in the way or cause them trouble. Though at first Shion and the other two children were meant to be taken to an orphanage, the idea was also turned down when the idea of staying at the school dorms until they graduated from middle school was brought up to prevent having three more mouths to feed in the crowded orphanage. The idea of being a nuisance to everyone quickly hit her when she realized that not only did her relatives didn't have the space in their house or money to feed them but the orphanage also didn't have the space and money for three new children as well thus causing her to harbor rather cautious behaviors and habits to prevent her peers at school to look after them. Instead, she became more responsible than before and relied on herself to take after a parental role for her siblings even when she had graduated middle school before they did. The girl never went to an orphanage after her middle school times ended and entered high school by herself, staying in the dorms at Gekkoukan High. She still payed visits to her siblings until they both graduated from middle school to stay with her in the high school dormitories. According to her, she is the only one aware of the dark hour and worries about her siblings when the time comes. Though she went through her first year of high school without a persona despite her awareness, her second year was when her presence with a persona began to grow more clearer to others thus immediately being recruited by S.E.E.S a few months into her second year. Shion rejected their extension to her, however, unsure what they wanted from her exactly but after being dragged into danger and pursued by the shadows, she quickly understood what the member of S.E.E.S was trying to explain to her with what she first thought was just a farce. It took a few weeks after Junpei joined the club for the girl to decide to stick with the club members after understanding more about the dark hour, but her involvement had her worry about her siblings more than ever for she wasn't sure if it would affect or even drag them into the same mess she's been pulled into. She was immediately reassured that her actions wouldn't impact her siblings in anyways and would be protecting them instead, which secured the girl's decision to join and lend the members of S.E.E.S her assistance. Even after joining the group, Shion was still very distant towards them and took care of herself to prevent them from having to worry about her. She was also not seen in the dorm most of the afternoon because she would leave to visit her siblings and it would sometimes concern her peers because she happens to be out very late before the dark hour starts. Being in a different class from a majority of the members also allowed her to sneak off without being swarmed by them and getting questioned when she leaves, though it does make her a bit worried about what she would come back to. The members do worry about her distant behavior, but decided that it was best to leave her be until she was comfortable enough to open up to them. Seeing that waiting was not doing anything for anyone, Fuuka approached her first thinking she'd be more comfortable with her due to being in the same class.
