Amalie Seidhvardr

Amalie is an elegant, polite and worried princess. Her mother passed away when she was younger, leaving her mostly under her brother's guidance; for her father had to rule the kingdom without his wife. Being the youngest she couldn't always join her brother in his classes. He had to learn how to be a proper king, whereas she didn't have to worry about becoming a queen yet. Her classes were focused on other things; how to be a proper princess, how to read, how magic could be used and the history of her kingdom to name a few.

Their father, the king, rarely had time for his youngest child, due to a war rising up. Amalie would listen to her brother's stories about their father, how he used to be before Amalie was born and their mother was still alive. Along with him she would fantasise about a dream where they would all be together and have the time to play in the fields. Their mother could show how to use magic.

After the incident Amalie changed. She was no longer a sweet loving girl, but instead a mad and powerful queen. Her mind twisted by the magic that overtook her.

 Before halvard left

She's the youngest of the royal family. Her memories of her mother are faint and distant, since she only had a couple of years together with her before her passing. Her brother, Halvard (13 years older than her), took it upon himself to take her under his wing to protect and raise her while their father ruled alone.
Their family protects a certain magical artefact, which at that point only their mother could wield. It contained a strong powerful magic that, in the wrong hands, could do a LOT of damage. They have a few rules when it came to the artefact, one of which is that only the women of the family were allowed to wield it, due to an incident generations before with a male heir.
This gave Amalie a sense of unease, feeling like she was only born to fulfil that duty. Luckily for her, Halvard was always there to ensure she felt wanted for more than that.

While her brother was learning how to be a king, Amalie learned basic magic. There was a sense of urgency to her studies she couldn't quite understand. Never been told that, before she was born, her brother was tasked with learning magic to uphold the magical shield barrier her mother was keeping up. Nor that he was forbidden to use magic ever again now that they had her. He never showed any spite towards her, thus leaving her in the dark.
Since the artefact was dangerously powerful to give to her immediately, they decided to get her slowly acquainted with it's magic by placing some of the crystals in her crown. She despised having to wear it daily, claiming it gave her a headache.

Eventually a war started and her father had to leave, leaving her brother as acting king while he was gone. He would tell his kids he would be back soon, but in the end wouldn't. With the news of their father's passing, her brother was suddenly a king. Before they had time to mourn he already had to leave to the war front, to help the soldiers that were still there and to find his father and bring him home. He made his sister acting queen, the youngest queen they ever had.
They had a tearful goodbye and she gave him a pin for his cape.

After Halvard left 

She was nervous, scared and felt alone on the throne. She wasn't taught anything about ruling a kingdom before she ascended the throne and longed for her brother to come home. Yet the only thing that came home one day was a torn and bloodied cape that belonged to her brother. As she mourned, the enemy got closer to the castle, intending to take over her kingdom and end her family's bloodline.

Her staff wanted her to flee, but she couldn't let her kingdom fall. She wanted to save her people and had promised to keep it safe. So she turned to the one thing she knew would help them: Magic.
She rushed to the artefact and took it. While it seemed to have worked: She managed to diminish her enemy's numbers and push them away. The kingdom now faced a new enemy: Amalie herself. When she had touched the artefact, it engulfed and swallowed her whole. Merging with it and in her grief stricken heart the magic pulled her most negative emotions forward. She transformed into a mad, magic wielding queen, who had not even a glimpse of the girl she used to be.

 Mad queen era

She starts to rule the kingdom while falling deeper into madness. Her people get scared of her, her staff tries to escape, but she takes non of that. punishing those who leave her. The real Amalie was still in there somewhere, hidden inside the broken mind in a dream-like state.

Unbeknownst to her, her brother had only been injured and was rescued by a travelling group of adventurers.

When they got to the kingdom and saw the mad queen, her brother was grief stricken. In his emotions he revealed that it was his sister, making the group confused and easily overpowered.
He now had to face facts: Fight his little sister and save his kingdom, or surrender and not hurt her.

In the end he does fight her, but he tries to pacify her as much as possible. Trying to avoid injuring her.
