Alban, being the eldest of the Blackinton brothers, had always been expected to take over the family business of running various ophthalmic clinics around London; for this reason, there was a lot of effort put into his upbringing — everything had to be perfect for the future head of the family, and because of this there was very little time for his younger brother, Emmett. A rift developed between the two and soon enough Emmett, feeling neglected and hard done by, began to resent Alban for taking up so much of the family's time.

Of course, Alban felt immensely guilty over this, and the only way he could think of making it up to his younger brother was to be as complacent and obedient as possible to avoid any excess attention from his parents. It was a kind gesture, but it never really made too much of a difference — by the time Alban was mature enough to realise why there was an awkwardness between himself and Emmett, the damage had been done. Being the determined person he is, however, Alban never gave up, and continued to follow his parents' orders without question.

It was for this reason that when Alban posed absolutely no objection when his father came to him on the morning of his twelfth birthday and presented to him a reserved, standoffish blonde by the name of Nadia who was to be his fiancée from that point onwards. Their marriage was arranged for two reasons: one, to keep the upper class bloodline "untainted", and two, for the financial benefits it would bring. On that day Alban was also gifted a golden wristwatch dating back to the early 1900s, an heirloom passed down from each head of the Blackinton family.

At the moment, Alban's marriage to Nadia is imminent; the moment he turns eighteen the wedding is to go ahead as planned, and he's having a hard time coming up with excuses to postpone it any longer. Confident that he can find a way to get out of the arrangement, though, Alban keeps his engagement a secret from Nathaniel and instead swears both Alistair and Ezra to secrecy as the trio try to assist him as much as possible.

Ezra Blake | Friends Alban has a great deal of time for Ezra, mainly due to the fact that Ezra is the one who introduced him to both Alistair and Nathaniel and so he feels rather indebted to him. Although he and Ezra don't have much in common their shared love of art [painting and photography respectively] brings them together, and they spend a lot of time chatting about their work.

Isabeau Durant | Friends Isabeau is like something of a little sister to Alban; he feels responsible for her in a way and is very protective of her. He's very close with her mother, Sylvie, as well, and makes it his business to visit her on a weekly basis. Alban doesn't generally show his worry over Isabeau but he's actually very concerned for her and tracks her health closely.

Alistair Fellows | Friends Alban is very fond of Alistair and believes him to be the most reliable, trustworthy person he knows. Alistair is the first person Alban approaches with the secret of his engagement and he's also the main person Alban goes to for advice. The friendship is greatly important to each of them but it can also be very draining and stressful at times.

Nathaniel Milsom | Boyfriend Alban is completely in love with Nathaniel and would do anything for him, even if it means pain and upset for himself. As a natural optimist he's always trying to cheer Nate up and make him see the good in things; he genuinely wants the best for Nathaniel and is completely supportive of him, making for a very healthy, nurturing relationship.
