There aren't many planets where someone could get away with human experimentation, but Pandora is one of the exceptions. Rae came to Pandora at the order of the Hyperion Corporation, only half aware of what she was getting into. As a medical doctor, she was used to dealing with cadavers, but she couldn't have predicted the living subject slag tests she would be expected to perform in the Wildlife Exploitation Preserve. At threat of harm to her off-planet wife if she were to refuse, she bent her moral compass and did as she was told. It was emotionally weighing, but she kept herself and her wife out of harm.

This continued until one of the experiments went wrong -- not because of anything she did, but because one of the subjects was able to destroy part of the facility, two of the other subjects, and escape using a grenade they had hidden prior to arriving that wasn't detected. The blame for all of this fell on Rae, and in the overkill way of retailation for which Hyperion's head is known, her wife was (supposedly) killed in response. This, combined with the guilt of what she had done trying to protect her, broke Rae, and had the effect Hyperion had been hoping for: with nothing else to live for, she threw herself brutally into her work.

Until, one day, she realized she could no longer.

She escaped when many of her fellow scientists were leaving the planet and did her best to blend into Pandora's rugged population as she tried to figure out where to go with her life -- and how to get back at Handsome Jack for what he had done. After a while, she turned to vault hunting, as it seemed like a dangerous enough adventure and way to, at the very least, piss off Jack in the short term. If nothing else, her new life means she's no longer being called Sammy.

Her fighting style keeps her long distance with sniper rifles. She does her best to give everyone she's forced to kill clean deaths -- as few shots as necessary, as quickly as possible. Her background in science and medicine, specifically where the limits of human endurance are concerned, gives her an edge when working with elementals and allows for efficient healing.

When she does speak, it's usually to complain about Pandora. She hates the planet almost as much as she hates Handsome Jack. She has a soft spot for normal, boring, non-deadly foliage and rain of the non-acid variety.

Relationships

Moriarty Collins [ companion ] Moriarty is a fellow vault hunter and one of Rae's occasional travel companions. The two form a very unlikely duo, considering Moriarty's general positivity and cheerfulness and Rae's cynicism and sarcasm. They often argue about how to best approach situations and from an outsider's perspective, it can seem like they don't get along very well, but the two are rather close.
