Being a kobold, Vux has learned to be extremely loyal to his pack. After all, without a pack, you are basically dead. Whenever he spots someone that could be a potential friend, he clings onto them like an excited puppy. People will notice that this vicious looking creature is actually quite friendly if one takes time to get to know him. He adapts pretty quickly to surroundings, like when in a dungeon or a battlefield, and with his great mind he is also really quick to calculate strategies in his head. This benefits both him and the group he is in. Because of his race and his history of being a pack animal, Vux knows the importance of a group and why you need to stick close to each other. He will take this information with him in his calculations. Outside of combat, Vux continues to baffle people with his great mind. While his Common might not be the best, you should not be fooled into thinking this kobold is not smart at all: in Draconic he reaches the vocabulary of a well trained magical professor.

But a smart kobold like Vux knows that he is physically weak. He avoids confrontation whenever necessary and generally avoids people as well, but when someone pushes him to the edge, he will not shy away from a warning shot. People who think they can take on this kobold with much ease, will find that they are incredibly wrong in their beliefs. An angered Vux will be spiteful towards those who have pushed him. Aside from this, Vux is incredibly insecure. His life as a lesser pack member has made a huge mark on the mind of the little guy, and to this day he still believes that he isn’t worth much. Towards strangers, he tends to be reserved and distrusting. As an outlander, you have a lot of dangers in the wild, and a city like Lumivaara is not much different from the forest Vux grew up in. A kobold needs to be able to fend for himself. This is why, in his earlier days, Vux tended to live off scraps and steal from other people. While he is well past that point in his life, when he sees something he wants, sometimes the urge to just take it will be too big.

Vux has learned to never judge people by their race, class or upbringing. He has always been the lowest of low in all regards, so there is not really a need for him to judge: creatures like goblins, lizardfolk and even tieflings are in Vux’s eyes the same as humans. In fact, the more exotic races will draw Vux’s attention and interest. Hearing that someone is in fact an exotic individual will prompt Vux to ask endless questions about them, not really paying attention to their emotional state until it is too late. Vux, after all, has very poor social skills, due to him never properly learning to connect with others. It is probably why he never could use his inner magic, until he picked up a spell book and used his draconic ancestry in a different way.

After a quest that made him experience death for a while, Vux is much more cautious and reserved. However, he is also more drawn to his friends than before. Something probably made him see that he should be thankful for having such great support. Was it the experience? Perhaps. But you can bet that if you’re a friend, he will always be there for you.

Likes

Magic

Vux is enchanted by what magic can do, and aims to use it to make the world a better place!

Nature

Nature is beautiful and diverse, and most of all quiet compared to the city. Vux loves to go to the forest to relax.

Smaller dragons

As long as they aren't as big as a house, Vux is okay with dragons. He actually has a little pseudodragon of his own!

Learning

Vux is a nerd and loves to learn. You can find him in the bookstore and library more than you find him anywhere else.

Dislikes

Senseless fighting

Why fight when we can solve this peacefully? Like with fun magic! :D

People with prejudice to kobolds (and other monstrous races)

He's not just a kobold. He's Vux! And he's happy to be here! Why be angry at someone for something they have no control over?

Unpredictable people

This little wizard likes to be prepared for anything. Unpredictable people make that impossible.

Perytons

He has experienced the afterlife for a brief moment after an encounter with a peryton. Never again.

Backstory

TL;DR

Born in a nomadic kobold pack known as the Petisse clan, Vux had a hard upbringing due to his lower ranks. When the first surge arrived, his mother appeared to have gotten magical abilities from her lineage. Vux could feel that he had magic as well, but had trouble with calling upon it. When he stole a spell book, and learned how to channel his own magic, Vux finally felt like he meant something. However, the kobolds in his clan still didn't care about Vux, they only cared about his newfound magical abilities. He decided to try and become someone, and travelled to Lumivaara to gain the experience he lacked. He has gained a lot of experience, both good and bad, and is on his way to become a great wizard!

The legend of Gikri and Pundrays

Long before Vux was even born, a pack of fellow kobolds - called the Petisse Clan - was in existence. The Petisse Clan was formed to serve an elderly gold dragon, named Pundrays The Protective, or just Pundrays for short. The gold dragon was a fierce promotor of good. Even much so that he didn’t order the kobolds to steal items for him. In fact, Pundrays asked the kobolds to do good as well. They had to have good hearts, give to the needy, and help him in the quest to bring peace to this world. To reward his servants, Pundrays rewarded them with magical essence, creating the first descendants of Pundrays. These descendants had power similar to modern-day sorcerers, and had golden horns, claws and scales on their body.

But whenever someone got magic, chances were that it would get to their head. And unfortunately, this was exactly what happened. One specific kobold, named Gikri (later known as Gikri the Brave or Gikri the Evil, depending on who tells the story), decided to challenge the gold dragon. This, obviously, did not sit well with Pundrays. According to legend, Pundrays burned most of the pack alive, including all of his descendants. All except for one. This was Netli the Survivor. Netli, being the only one still able to do some magic, was busy picking berries when the catastrophe happened. The pack decided to blame the descendants of Pundrays for what happened. So, the only survivor alive was put in the lowest spot in the pack. They had no rights to speak of anymore: they had to eat last, weren’t allowed to have children, and were strictly forbidden to cast magic in any type or form. Netli, however, was pregnant already, and secretly told her own children that they should try and keep the bloodline going, no matter what. So for the next centuries, there were always a few children that also had the magical powers of their ancestors. However, without proper training, they lost the ability to cast the magic they had in their blood. The only remnants of the great gold dragon, were their golden accents.

And now we skip to about seven years ago.

Troublesome upbringing

Growing up in the small and warm Lorach Forest, instead of the hustle and bustle of the city, Vux is an outlander through and through. The little green kobold grew up with the name Faessi, and lived in an ancient - now nomadic - pack of kobolds, called the Petisse Clan. All members were aspiring rogues and rangers. One ‘shaman’ was a druid, but this was merely their own version of a cleric: the shaman was there to heal - medicinally - those that had been wounded in battle, or when they came back from food raids. He was a self-proclaimed conduit of Kurtulmak, the god of kobolds, and claimed to be a descendant of Pundrays. The shaman also learned others how to read, both Common and Draconic, for when they needed to do so. Vux grew up with the idea that, once he had obtained food, he had to hide it really carefully, or he should eat it immediately. After all, he wasn’t very high in the ranks. Those that snatched food away before the leader ate, were brutally punished. Vux was a child of the omega of the pack, making him rather unwanted. Omegas weren’t allowed to have children, after all. Yet, Vux was born, partially due to his mother’s fiery spirit and mother instincts. His mother, named Gehla, looked different too, having golden scales on the ridge of her snout and her back. Vux had these scales too, and still has them, even though one has been ripped out. While he grew up, he was always picked on. By his peers and by those higher in the rankings. But, Vux accepted this. This was normal. He was the child of the scum of the pack, so it was very, very normal he should be put in his place. So, for the longest of times, he collected berries for his packmates. When he was hungry, Vux secretly ate some berries before he turned them in, but never too much.

New Magic, new life?

Then, the surge happened. Vux’s mother fell to the ground as she felt her sorcerous powers being awakened, probably because she was the one descendant of Pundrays, not the cleric. She was suddenly capable of performing magic. Vux felt a small tinge, and just like his mother, he tried to do magic as well. But, nothing came out. It was like his ability to project magic wasn’t that well developed. After centuries of not having to deal with magic, the kobolds had forgotten about their history with Pundrays. So when Vux’s mother started to cast magic, she shot up into the ranks. But where his mother got higher in the ranks, merely because she was so powerful, Vux stayed at a low position. This changed on the day Vux was allowed to join a raid. His packmates didn’t think he would be very useful, but hell, it wasn’t like he could screw it up majorly as well. The raid consisted of two teams. One would go and steal food, while the other stole coins, gems, and other items of worth. Vux was put on the second team, and he had to sneak into a house. Vux was naturally very nimble, and he quickly found his way into the house. Once inside, Vux had to prevent himself from gasping. Gosh, it looked so awesome! The house he stumbled upon, was one owned by a wizard apprentice. The little kobold saw a big cauldron, potions, herbs, a wand… Even a spellbook! Curious, he waddled over to the spellbook and paged through it. There were so many cool spells! One was a spell called ‘minor illusion’. According to this book, he needed some fleece. Vux tiptoed over to where he saw the fleece earlier, grabbed a little bit, and walked back to the book. Okay. Following the instructions, Vux managed to create a brief illusion. It was a fake flame. Vux’ eyes lit up. This was so cool! He snatched the book, some fleece and a cool purple napkin, and quickly walked out.

Back at the pack, everyone was angry at Vux for stealing a book. How was that worth something? To prove them wrong, Vux performed the same spell. The kobolds gasped. This could actually come in handy! If they had someone who could cast illusions, they could have a great advantage in future raids! And so it went for the next four years: Vux was invited to join a raid, he had to cast some illusions (or his floating fake magic hand), and he got some extra food in return. Vux was happy. This was great! He was finally accepted for who he was. Well, not exactly, but Vux maintained this vision for at least four years. After then, he finally saw that he was simply used. No one asked for Vux, but for the illusions. No one really cared for him. Angered and saddened, Vux ran away. He should have known others were simply using him. Well, no more! He was going to prove them all so, so wrong! He would be the greatest kobold wizard of all time, and they would all know it! It was around this time that Vux said goodbye to his self-deprecating name, and adopted a new one: Vux.

Start of a great wizard

But he had nowhere to go. The forest was still kobold territory, since they were nomads. And besides, how was he going to hunt all by himself? Part of kobold culture was staying together. A lone kobold couldn't do much. Sure, he could look for berries, but ultimately he would need meat as well. A brief thought entered his mind: why not hide in the big human city, Lumivaara? Sure, humans didn’t like him either, but that way he was closer to food, and further away from his stupid kobold packmates. So, the smart little kobold snuck into the city at night, and hid himself in an abandoned cellar. It stinks a lot, and there are rumours why it stinks so much, but Vux couldn’t care less. It was a safe place where nobody came. He proceeded to spend the next year living off scraps, just like he did in the old pack. He learned all the spells in his spellbook, such as alarm, find familiar and disguise self. There weren’t a lot, just six, but to the kobold, it was enough for now. After all, he was in a big city, and there were so many spell books he could 'borrow' spells from!

After signing himself up for several quests, Vux started to open up a bit to several people. One being Darold, a tiefling bard, and the other being Pickett, a gnome sorcerer. They were the first few people that made Vux see he wasn’t hated by everyone: just the people who didn’t understand his own situation. Over the next months, Vux grew closer and closer to Darold, who he now considered one of his only true friends. This bond grew even stronger when Pickett was brutally murdered, with the two deciding they needed to look after eachother. Eventually, Vux moved out of the stinky cellar, and moved in with the tiefling in a library, run by the father of the latter. During his first quest, Vux had adopted an orphaned kobold child, which was partially his own doing. He still feels very bad about it, and tries to raise Sehzi - the child - to the best of his ability, with the belief that she can be anything she desires - as long as she does good in the world.

With Vux now having a stable source of social interaction, he grew much more civilized. Sure, he is still a kobold, and sometimes his kobold nature acts up (like him collecting and hoarding items), but he realised he was much better off when he didn’t act like he did back at his own pack. After all, he wanted to separate himself from the common belief that kobolds were just savages. He started to pay for food, interact with people under the safety of his own warm cloak, and tried to make the world around him a better place, bit by bit. There were still people that didn’t quite understand him, or viewed him as an ordinary kobold. This is why Vux stayed hidden, instead of throwing his disguises away. He hopes that, one day, he can show that he was the hero all along, and that people would accept him into society. Vux, being smart, knows that this takes a very long time, but as determined as he is intelligent, he makes damn well sure he shows his good side almost every time.

And that is why, eventually, he officially became a member of the Adventurer’s Guild. He is mainly known for being small, anxious and good with magic, but perhaps people will acknowledge him for being so much more than that… After he has proven himself.

A while ago, Vux experienced what death feels like. On a quest to get items for a charming lady, he found himself battling a peryton, alongside a human warlock named Arlowe, and a human cleric named Himyar. Due to the massive amount of stress, Vux stayed hidden for most of the fight, only coming out when both of his allies were down. However, the peryton overpowered him, and dropped him from a great height while flying. This killed Vux instantly. He was revived a while later, but the experience has made a huge impact.
