Ume is Sayuri's best friend. The two are usually seen going for walks together or reading books and they are perfectly content just being in the same room together so they don't really talk much. Sayuri is her only friend and she wouldn't know what to do without her. She's not as uptight as Sayuri but she still prefers cleanliness and manners, although she finds Suzu and her friends' pranks hilarious, much to Sayuri's dismay.
