Riku first met Ren when he was on his daily stroll through the city, Ren looked as lost an abandoned kitten.  Riku didn't think twice and took him under his wing.  You can see Riku without Ren following a few steps behind him.  Riku and Ren are both stupid, not knowing that they both like each other, they assume it's just friendship.  Ren likes to place kisses on Riku's cheek and Riku doesn't mind, he'll reciprocate but never anywhere besides his cheek or forehead.  Riku keeps his affection towards Ren at a minimum.
