He was a victim... A victim of a series of sick experiments, with the aim to create non-genetic hybrids. Obi's arm, tail, genes and hormones had been torn, sliced and shredded, only to be replaced with parts of [their] choosing. This left a permanent scar, not only on Obi's body, but on his soul and beliefs.    

Obi used to be fit and and healthy, a confident man that always minded his own business. But as he reached the end of his life, he had been reduced to a mere impuissant soul, jumbled and too afraid to continue his own life. Now his existence depends on his desperate attempts to cling onto any meaning Obi had when he was alive. 

After death Obi ended up "where they sleep", a place with no rules or principle apart from the word of their king, Lord. Obi, however, refused to stay. Instead Obi attached himself to a traveller. Maybe getting invested in someone else's life would make him forget about his own?
