Personality

Somnus, at his core, is driven by his emotions. This might be a result of being hag-raised or just being spoiled, it’s uncertain but his actions most likely never align with thoughtful logic. This usually makes him seem very childish and younger than he is and his rather blunt way of speaking has landed him in variously uncomfortable situations. Although, vulnerability is something of a sore spot for him. Somnus’ confidence is mostly surface level and enough to be called vain: But he lives with a lot of regrets and often secludes himself to not burden others with the weight of his heart.

Somnus also has a heavy 'Shoot First, Question Later' type of mentality. As this is the result of his gran being a hag; she's very capable on her own and if in danger, she's in no immediate threat. So, there was a certain level of expectancy for Somnus to also be able to defend himself without relying on others. Which is where his self-preservation kicks in: he tends to only heal himself, rather than his party members. That’s not to say that he won’t heal others! He is observant and tries to keep an eye on the health of others but if they’re not close to death’s door, then he will prioritize offensive spells and his own health— especially since he puts himself at the forefront of the battle.

His moral alignment is kind of warped; his compass of good and evil doesn’t exactly align to the standard which has gotten him into trouble time and time again. He cares very deeply for those he loves and seems loyal to a fault, but as a result of being raised by a hag and mostly raised in solitude, he doesn’t take into consideration the words of others very well. His actions are often questioned because although he has it planned out, his party doesn’t see the good it could bring like he does.

Trivia

  • The Gulthias Staff he has? The second he laid eyes on it, he knew he had to have it. He rolled a nat20 on his attack against that poor, evil druid. They never stood a chance.
  • One time, he smashed an apple against the wall because he wanted to check if it was still as fresh as it looked. A, now deceased, party member of his then proceeded to lick the mush off the wall.
  • I started a twitter thread about him but I'm unsure if I'll ever continue it.
History

  • a google docabout what he did for two years after Barovia.

For most of his life, Somnus was never aware of the parentage that brought him into the world. All he knew was the hag that raised him, whom he fondly calls Gran, and the forest he grew up in. After all, he was abandoned to the care of the hag when he was an infant, so it would have been a miracle if he even knew his parents at this time. The hag raised him within the isolation of their woods and treated him like he was her own, but it was rare that he was allowed to leave the lush solitude of the forest and if he tried without permission, he always ended up back home. He was always told that this was for his own good— and for the safety of others. But every so often, he would be allowed to venture out into the outside world and socialize, yet he would always have to come back.

This never truly bothered the young dhampir though, there were many lurking spirits in Gran’s forests that kept him company and the hag herself was always fun company. She did her business that catered to the shadier, questionable half of humanity and Somnus was always eager to help, as the people he met through this were very interesting characters. He also had a rather curious spirit friend that took the form a Norweigan Forest cat and stayed ever at his side since they met. This cat, nameless for most of his life, would be a companion he couldn’t live without. She might not have been able to speak a common language with Somnus, but the feline still provided him with many endless adventures that he couldn’t otherwise have had alone.

Eventually though, both he and the hag realized that being as isolated as he was for over twenty decades wasn’t going to do any favors for his personal growth. So on his 25th year, Somnus was allowed to leave on an adventure that was prompted by a letter he got, inviting him to Barovia. Of course, he took his trusted cat friend with him.
Barovia though would prove to be more traumatic than an opportunity for the dhampir. The journey through those cursed lands, in order to fight a vampiric evil, cost him the lives of many party members. Some of whom he can’t even remember the names or faces of. Here in these lands, he faced many personal conflicts— one of which Strahd took advantage of and offered to turn the tired, confused dhampir into a full-fledged vampire. An offer that caused Somnus to betray his party and sneak away to Castle Ravenloft; the first of many mistakes that will haunt him for the years to come.

His little stunt had brought the demise of a fellow party member, Rhen. She was one of his first friends, the two of them had met in his childhood— one of the few occasions he was allowed to leave the forest. See, in his party’s search for him when Somnus went to go to Strahd, they came across a very charismatic oathbreaker paladin named Adrastus who made them believe that he knew where their friend had gone. But what the party didn’t know was that Adrastus was the messenger who sent Somnus to Castle Ravenloft and led them in the completely opposite direction. But by the time they realized the paladin had been lying to them the whole time, it was too late. Adrastus was a one-man army, and could’ve easily downed the whole party if he so wished. But instead, like a predator playing with his prey, he opted for a clean beheading of Rhen and cursing one of the elven members, Rosaline.

Strahd was kind enough to transport an exhausted dhampir back to his party, through the will of his mist and desire to keep Adrastus from murdering the rest of his play things and Somnus briefly witnessed Rhen’s death before passing out.
The rest of those days were hazy, fueled by vengeance and a pained heart. As if by some twisted fate, the party member they just lost was replaced by a wood elf named Kostas who had been one of the living members of the past party that tried to unsuccessfully stop the Devil Strahd. Together, trudging through the next few months, the party enlisted the help of Esmeralda and Rudolph van Richten and finally defeated Strahd von Zarovich, thus lifting the curse of the lands.

The party then took a two year break, although some of them opted to travel with each other. Siora, the sea elf and Fenrir, the pink tiefling with his rat companion traveled together while Somnus and his now named familiar, Hela, stayed with Kostas at his estate before embarking on his own personal journey: To find his father. He got a lead from Kostas, after telling Somnus that he had a tiefling friend who used to have a glamour that suspiciously looked at lot like Somnus and that tiefling would always tell the elf that his master made his glamour look like the son he had to give up. Turns out, that very odd yet specific coincidence turned out to be just the right hint. It led him to meeting a vampire named Valerius Ike Pendragon, an almost carbon copy of Somnus.

Somnus and Kostas spent some time at the dhampir’s father’s estate, so that he could learn about why he was abandoned in the first place. The woman that his father fell in love with, Somnus’ mother, came from a long line of vampire hunters. Their relationship was already on thin ice but when she became pregnant, that immediately broke any truce between Valerius and his spouse’s family. They would allow for the child to be born but would abandon it to Valerius’ care— and even so, they told him that once the baby was handed over; they would be free to him and the newborn child once it became of age. So out of fear for his child’s life, Valerius thought it was best to leave him in more capable hands. Which is where the hag that raised him comes in. But the reason why Somnus was left with her was just as shocking as finding out that he had a bounty over his head— from his own maternal family. See, the old lady's visage was a disguise the hag took when Valerius brought a newborn child to her doorstep. Her true identity is that she’s a goddess known as Hecate and was Valerius’ own warlock patron. It was so much to unpack but somehow, it made sense. And after some months, it brought Somnus enough closure that he was ready to leave his father’s estate to find his next adventure.

But as Kostas and Somnus said their goodbyes to Valerius, their parting reaped the consequences of yet another mistake the dhampir made. His maternal family had been tracking him and his father the moment Somnus arrived and finally gained on them the very moment Somnus and his friend decided to leave. The battle that ensued was unpleasant and not how the dhampir wanted to meet his mother or her family. It left Somnus with a fresh scar on the left side of his face, Kostas with lightning scars down half his body, and with Valerius murdered by his ex-lover’s mother. The two, including Hela, only managed to escape because Hecate manifested a portal for them.

The months after that was a blur.

Somnus stayed with Kostas at the elve’s family manor until he was healed enough to be without supervision, then he returned to Gran’s forest without a word. It was around this time where he started getting dreams and hallucinations of an alternate version of himself. Little did he know that this would be premonitions for the start of another journey with his old party. And out of fear, he withheld such information until it came back to bite him.

It turns out, the alternate version of himself had married Siora, the sea elf, and had a family with her in that timeline. But because of the misfortune of being related to particularly spiteful vampire hunters, alternate Somnus’ maternal family hunted his own and by some twisted fate, he remained alive with now a dead wife and children. That caused him to tap into the evil that was latent in his heart and he made a pact with Kronus who pretended to be the father of time in order, Chronos, to manipulate alternate Somnus— an exchange that if alt!Somnus promised to be a vessel for the titan and break him out of Tartarus, Kronus would deliver him into a timeline where Siora still yet lives. But in doing so, alt!Somnus brought back many old loved ones to taunt the current party into complacency so that they would die by their loved ones hands— which would cause enough grief and trauma for the living Siora to be then easier to exploit into becoming a vessel of alt!Siora’s soul.

This and more, was all information Somnus had kept to himself: his most damning mistake yet. Somnus didn’t want to believe there was an alternate version of himself out there, doing all this despite the signs that were there and all the trouble the party got into because of alt!Somnus’ ploy. His secrecy caused him to almost lose Siora, the very same that his alternate self was trying to obtain like a broken trophy. And in the end, it caused the demise of yet another innocent party member, the lives of many innocents, and let loose a destructive titan into the world. His party, after all they’ve been through, still looked to him with warmth in their hearts and that pained him the most. So when their final battle was over, despite Kronus now being loose, he retired from the party immediately and returned to Hecate’s forest. His secrecy only brought sorrows to those he cared for and he thought it was best that he remained in the forest, just like Gran originally planned.

strange loot

From Barovia: A small yellowed, mummified hand, a dissected frog on a stick, a hag finger, a bag full of bat shit, a 6" tall wooden figure of a mummy, a cloak made out of ghoul skin, an 8" diameter varnished orb made from a nothic eye, a small wooden coffer that has the withered tongue of a dire wolf, a femur bone of a humanoid, a ulna bone of a humanoid, a carousel with wolves chasing children instead of horses, a small bag of random bones, a necklace of human teeth, an empty flask, a pair of antlers from a druid he killed. A few bones off of Strahd's body that disappeared after six months.

Disikes

Relationships

Siora | ????? somnus.exe has stopped working

The warlock has some pretty.... complicated feelings about her. Don't get him wrong, she's a wonderful person & he'd literally kill for her but do you think he knows how to process his own emotions? No.

IMG%20URL
Rhen | Childhood friend.

Someone who meant a lot to him as she was his first friend. They didn't get to spend as much time together as he'd like, but he just hopes that her soul was able to leave Barovia when the party defeated Strahd.

Kostas | Basically Brothers.

Who knew threatening someone when you had LVL 3 exhaustion to help the party out meant that they'd become life-long friends? He owes a lot to this pumpkin-looking ass and he's unsure about how to make up for that.

Fenrir | friends.

An interesting pink tiefling, who Somnus also threatened because they looted the bodies of his dead party members but he needed to fill the void somehow. They're closer to Siora than they are to Somnus, but if someone even thought about harming them, he'd kill the poor bastard.
