Ren is in the second tier of Shinigami. Their function is to maintain Earth (the Overworld) and its living population, generally through natural disasters and genocides.
Like Ari, they have no gender or discernable sex. Their job requires a certain type of person, so most other Shinigami (besides Ari) are wary of them. Which is fair, since they can be kind of creepy.
