02 — Backstory

Princess Luna was not seen as the motherly type for most of her reign. Neither was Celestia, to be fair. But both did still bear children during their long lives, unfortunately outliving them all. After that, they both swore off children until they felt they could handle it again. And for Luna, that time was a little under 1100 years ago. It was sudden for almost everypony. No one suspected she was even courting, much less pregnant. There was a shock across Canterlot and it's many colonies to hear that little Lady Callisto had been born. And seemingly with no father in sight.

Luna never confirmed who the stallion was who helped in Callisto's creation, though rumours were rampant. A common theory was that Luna used the magic and DNA of a random castle guard. They proposed she didn't court anyone because she didn't want to outlive them. But Luna did not let the gossip bother her or her child, and she raised Callisto with Celestia's help. Early on, it was obvious how much magic potential Callisto held, her feathers nearly twice the length of her body. It caused Luna to meet with Celestia and determine, if Callisto wanted to, they would train her to become a princess as well.

And they did. Once Callisto was in her mid-twenties, she decided to take up the offer and become the Princess of Memories. She did well in her studies and worked hard to earn her horn. And at age 34, young Lady Callisto became Princess Callisto. Unfortunately for the newly-crowned royal, though, something was wrong with her mother. Princess Luna had grown irritable, crude, and aggressive, verbally assaulting guards and servants alike. Only a few weeks after her daughter's coronation, Luna turned into an evil Deviate -- Nightmare Moon. Havoc and hatred wrecked the Castle of Two Sisters, and Princess Celestia's hoof was forced. She banished Luna to the moon with an insanely powerful spell -- one that not even another Alicorn could break. For Callisto, this was when everything fell apart.

03 — Story

Hiding

It only took a few hours after Luna was defeated by Celestia for the citizens of the kingdom to crow unruly. They demanded answers from the royals, the guards, anypony they could get their hooves on. A lot of this frustration was pointed towards Callisto. Princess Celestia had shut herself away for the time being, and any appearance was abrupt and frightening. So the next best option was to heckle Luna's daughter. The questions, the rumours, the gossip -- it all got to Callisto, and it caused her to be incredibly anxious and jumpy. She accidentally used her magic on a stallion that had snuck into the castle, and the fearmongering spread like wildfire. 'What are the royals doing? They're going rogue! They're gonna kill us all!'

After weeks of nonstop interruptions and more aggressive attempts at finding answers, Callisto was at her wit's end. She was paranoid, unable to sleep, and it was disastrously affecting her work. So, in a fit of frustration, she concocted a powerful memory spell. Within the day, the princess of memories was forgotten. And it was heavenly, until she realised it meant no one knew her within the castle. She fled, upset with herself for doing something so rash. Callisto flew all the way to the Crystal Empire, where it seemed her magic was not able to reach, but even the townsfolk there weren't too keen on who she was. Callisto decided it was a good chance to live a normal life, and began hiding her wings. But she was originally born a pegasus, so she went to the College of Magic and requested an amulet to hide her horn instead.

Forced Into The Open

As the decades and centuries passed, Callisto's entire existence came into question. Both in the forms of her identity, and the mysterious 'missing princess' theory many ponies gossiped about. Her name, Callisto, was one common in New Canterlot, but the modern naming schemes were less formal. So, she changed her name to be Moonsugar, as it included her first and middle names in theme. She also cut her hair, as the long ans flowy pigtails were suspicious as best. Moonsugar was content to continue hiding out in various parts of the world, and had, until about twenty years after her mother's return.

Luna coming back had occurred to Moonsugar before, but she never thought much of it. She was still very upset with her mother, as she felt abandoned. She couldn't understand why Luna had become a Deviate, and so she never bothered trying to come back to Canterlot. But the locations Moonsugar could live without being caught by the elders whom she once was neighbors with was growing slim, and she was forced to come within close proximity of the kingdom -- to West Ponyville. She did not suspect anything to come of it, as the ex-royal lived almost a millennia without hiccough... How wrong she was.

Reclaiming Her Crown

A young filly by the name of Mangolia Boulevard was found on the front steps of Moonsugar's homestead. Only, the name of the street she lived on as Magnolia Boulevard, and this filly was actually suffering from amnesia. How lucky for the ex-princess of memories. Moonsugar, of course, let her stay while trying to decide the best course of action. She even attempted to search through her memories, but with a few centuries without practice, Moonsugar was more than rusty, and caused one of the memories to fade. However, they were able to determine where some of the images were from -- Canterlot. Of course.

Moonsugar huffed and grumbled and tried to resist the filly's puppy-dog eyes, but she eventually gave in. Together, they wandered from Ponyville to Canterlot. And on their journey, Moonsugar tried not to give away too many details, but it had been a long time since she had to hide herself from someone non-stop. So Magnolia quickly became aware that the stranger assisting her was the missing princess rumoured by conspiracy theorists and little foals on the playground. Magnolia attempted every form of persuasion she could, and eventually -- with a little guilt tripping -- convinced Moonsugar to return to the castle.

04 — Trivia

  • When I first saw Moonsugar [who, at the time was named Dream Dusk], I had just gotten into the pony community on discord and instagram. She's a huge part of my history in the community, and I'm super happy to have her!

  • Her full name is Callisto "Moonsugar" Saccharine Memorium because Luna struggled with deciding what to name her!

  • Moonie's names have important aspects of her character within their meanings. Callisto is one of Jupiter's moons, Saccharine means something sweet or sentimental, and memorium is often used on epitaphs to commemorate a loved one.

  • While Moonsugar was in hiding, she eventually became a homesteader, enjoying the quite life of acres of land and animals to care for. When she moved back to Canterlot, she sold a lot of her animals, but kept one of the barn cats. Her name is Prismo, and she's rarely seen indoors unless Moonie is sleeping, then she curls up with her.
