Zardren is my first D&D character, and my longest standing one. He's gone through a lot of changes as a character, but I feel like he's reached a good point, as far as personality and backstory is involved.

Zardren is an orphan outcast who one day was adopted by a noblewoman. During his time at the orphanage, he was a shy and timid boy who mainly spent his time around the priests, not wanting to be near the other children who would bully and torment him. Once he was adopted, he quickly grew out of his shell and developed into being more extroverted. He acquired a fondness for the finer things in life: beautiful clothing, delicious food, the company of esteemed nobles. All of these were given to him by his doting mother.

His mother showered Zardren with Gifts and allowed him to live a carefree, luxurious life. One day, his mother even informed him that she found a beautiful woman who agreed to an arranged marriage. It was at that point that Zardren seemingly had everything he wanted! A beautiful woman who unconditionally loved him without even ever meeting him? It was a dream!

But then, on the day of his wedding, he snuck past the estate guards, wishing to converse with his mother before the big wedding, unsure about all this, and starting to question the meaning of all this, his entire life with her, due to thought-provoking questiong he received from his tutor and mentor: Amadeus Mazarro.

Once he made it past the guards, he pressed his ear to his mother's room's door, and overheard a conversation he was not meant to her.

According to what he heard from eavesdropping, Zardren's mother only adopted him with the purpose of using a magic ritual, the wedding, to strip him of his free will permanently, and turn him into her own personal magic puppet that would obey her every command, no questions asked. Zardren was confused: magic puppet? To his knowledge, he didn't even have any magical powers, how could he be used in such a way? What's all this about a ritual? Apparently this wedding was all a ruse, it was some part of a ritual?

His world was crumbling around him in just a manner of minutes. It was then that he knew he had to run away: he could not let this happen. After all, he LIKED thinking for himself! And he didn't like being lied to, the priests always told him that a liar was worse than a thief.

He gathered what little belongings he could fit in a small pack, and with the help of his mentor, he ran away, to a small village, and purchased a ferry ticket to a far away kingdom, hoping to find out for himself what he really wants in life.
