Kleos

Once there was a time, thousands of years from now, where the world was very different different place from the one of today. This was a world of gods, the Golden Era of the myths, where the gods roamed around creatures spreading magic and awakening the species intelligence. It was in this world that Kleos was born, a young lamb in a wandering sheep flock. From his birth it was clear little Kleos was different to his other siblings – they were all, for lack of a better word, sheep, blindly following the flock as they roamed from paddock to paddock. Kleos preferred to do things on his own, like resting in the warm sun, or watching the shapes the clouds formed in the sky. The other sheep whispered about this strange lamb – how he’d rather sleep than play with the others, or how he always seemed to be thinking about something far away from the reality they lived in. But none of this bothered Kleos, in fact, he hardly noticed, content to live his blissful life of daydreams and wonder for the rest of his days.

However, sheep flock for a reason: to socialise, or to find greener pastures, or fend off predators. The behaviour keeps them safe, and for a sheep who strays from the herd, there is always danger. Kleos’ mother was well aware of this and tried her hardest to keep her son close, but his independent and curious spirit drew him further and further away from the flock, away from his family and away from safety. One day it called him deep into the forest, idly following a lovely butterfly as it floated from flower to flower. The forest held even more wonders for the young lamb to marvel at, including a beautifully soft patch of grass that called out to be napped on. And nap he did, curling up in the grass and drifting off to dreamland. By the time he awoke it was well into the night, so he decided to stretch off and head back home to the comfort of his flock. Only, upon returning to the clearing, he found nothing. His family was gone, the tent packed away, and only a few clumps of grass to suggest they were even there. Sheep flocks will wander, but there is no room for sheep who wander in the opposite direction.

Kleos had never felt lonely in all the time he spent by himself, but now he did. Now he felt like his entire world, everything he’d ever depended on for his whole short life, was vanished, leaving only an empty, sorrowful hole. So, he did the only reasonable thing anyone would do in that situation: he cried. The pitiful, miserable bleats of the little lost lamb echoed through the grassy clearing, through the dark forest and over the cavernous mountains. His sadness travelled so far that it reached high up into the clouds, where one of the gods was resting. The god never felt such strong negative emotion and was so moved by the cries that he travelled down to comfort the small creature, feeling pity at his sad story. Determined that no one should ever abandon this adorable fuzzy creature ever again, the god proposed that Kleos would become his familiar, an immortal companion that shall travel with the god far and wide - forever and together. But for one to become a familiar it must first give up upon something that makes it mortal, a feeling or a trait that makes creatures "human" and that could never return. The god offered to take away from Kleos the need for connections with other beings, the same need that was making him suffer so much. The sheep was so devastated that he didn't think twice before accepting the deal, so the god used his magical abilities to grant the lamb beautiful wings and an immortal life as the god's personal companion, never to need another creature again. For hundreds of years Kleos lived a wonderful, pampered life with his new master; snoozing on clouds, gallivanting through the sky, or when he could be bothered, answering the prayers of a lucky mortal and bringing them favourable weather. Life with the gods suited Kleos very well; immortals had very few of the responsibilities mortals did, freeing up most of his time for daydreaming or sleeping, while the rest could be spent however it pleased in the moment. Yes, it was good to be a god, or at least blessed by them – everything was perfect.

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, so too did Kleos’ time in the divine palace.

When the gods left this world because of the Crystal War, Kleos was too busy napping far away. The god that once made him his familiar decided to break his promise and left Kleos behind - there was no place for such pure and creative soul such as Kleos where they were going. When Kleos woke up he was alone again. But this time he didn't feel sad or the need to have anyone else besides himself. As an immortal still, Kleos was doomed to watched as the stronghold of the gods crumbled, fading away until even their memory was dismissed as mere legend. With nobody believing there wasn't really a lot to do anymore – none of the mortals prayed to him for weather or bestowed him with gifts, he was kind of just… there. Floating around clouds with no purpose or direction, just… floating. So, naturally, he resorted to doing what he did best: sleeping. For almost a millennium he floated along on his cloud, watching the world go by and sleeping when it got boring. It was rather a bad habit, but it wasn't like he had anyone to tell him otherwise, so that was how it was. One day, his cloud wandered the seas and ended upon a very small, unusual village – a village full of different creatures, working and living together as the old days. Kleos was curious at first, but he had spent so long only watching from afar that he almost let the clouds carry him away once again. But before he did a soft breeze blew his clouds and forced him to fly before he fell. He was surprised and in shock - not only because he had spent decades laying on the clouds that he forgot how to fly for a moment, but also because that soft breeze carried a nostalgic scent,a smell so subtle but so pure he could never forget no matter how many millenniums have passed: it was the soft scent of the gods.

The shock has awaken Kleos enough to sparkle the curiosity he once had for things. After so long floating it was a strangely pleasant feeling to fly; so Kleos timidly flew to the village, curious not only by the amount of different races living together, but also determined to know why after all this time he felt the god's touch once again. The village creatures were excited for Kleos arrival, everyone was gentle and made Kleos feel welcome once again, like he felt when he was with his god master. The sheep even forgot he didn't need social connections anymore, it was just nice being there and so he stayed. He decided to be around for a while and try to find out the origin of that scent or at least the meaning of it. Since everyone in the village had to contribute, Kleos decided to bestow his immortal gifts once again and helped bring rain/sun to the village as they needed. But being still for so long made Kleos lazy and unmotivated, so it's not a surprise to find him napping on clouds when he is supposed to be helping.
