✦ Natalie "Nat" Black

Age: 24
Date of Birth: Christmas Eve, 1984
Hair color: Black
Eye color: Brown
Nationality: Brazilian-American
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 152

Personality

If there's one thing Nat is, it's resilient. If there's a couple more things that she is, it's loyal, optimistic, creative and funny. Without these things, she probably wouldn’t have made it as far as she has in her life, even if she still hasn’t made it terribly far. She has good survival instinct, even if sometimes she wishes she didn’t,

She’s kind of self-pitying and can be gloomy, she’s often gloomy, in fact. She can be self centered, and won’t take time out of her day to help anyone else if she’s having a particularly bad one. She puts her needs first, always, she realizes this is a bad thing to do, and sometimes does things for others that inconvenience her, but she’s always aware in her mind that she is doing this for her own sake still, just so she doesn’t seem selfish. She isn’t very trusting, some could call this cautious.

Despite her ability to see ghosts, she isn’t spiritual. She doesn’t believe she has a soul and she doesn’t know what’s going to happen when she dies. She can’t get the ghosts to talk to her about death. The couple ones she’s tried end up evaporating. She doesn’t believe in god, or practice any kind of spirituality, no praying, no gods, no energies or chakras, no spiritual “we are all connected” stuff. She doesn’t have the time, she doesn’t have the faith. This is neither a good nor bad thing. It’s just a thing.

Another thing, is that she’s basically given up on herself. She has dreams and goals and inklings of how they can be accomplished, but she doesn’t put forth the effort to get started with them, and she’s too afraid to overcome the obstacles she’s put in place for herself. She sticks with her podcast and blog, because that’s basically the only part left of her dream that she can still work with.

As mentioned, she's resilient though, she’ll just keep going even though she thinks it’s pointless. She’s good at holding on.

✦ Story

As a child, She was very inquisitive, she was the kid who in class, would always raise her hand the second a question was asked. She was quiet, but overbearing and nosy if someone was WRONG, and wouldn’t hesitate to point it out to them. She also happened to believe in a lot of things that weren’t real. Thanks to Alex’s influence, she spent many a day in her bedroom or around the neighborhood pretending to look for aliens or ghosts or other things that bump in the nightBecause of her strange interests and overall reputation and kind of rude and weird, she didn’t have too many friends. This persisted until middle school, when people stopped ignoring her because of her odd interests and mannerisms, but instead because the loss of her parents was widely known news across the school (her father was a teacher), and no one knew how to approach her other than half-hearted “I’m sorry"s.

She was taken in by her friend Alex's family, and at 18, the two girls moved out to leave for college. Neither graduated. Natalie decided to put what she learned from journalism classes to work writing for whatever online publications would publish her, and Alex decided she was going to start a podcast documenting weird supernatural/paranormal news and unsolved murders. Alex considered Natalie her lucky charm for this kind of stuff and naturally assigned her as her co-host. Natalie always seemed to know where the spooky stuff was, any ghost tour they went on together would have evidence that the guides would scramble to document.

This is, of course, because Natalie was dead.

To clarify, half dead. See, she was supposed to die in the car crash with her parents, but she didn't. A bureaucratic error on death's part, a miracle, whatever you want to call it, that's what it was. Not fully alive, and not fully dead, the dead flocked to her. Natalie never so much learned her abilities as suddenly had them thrust upon her lap and had to deal with them. After her brush with death, she could see forms and figures moving silently about that no one else ever seemed to comment on, even if she pointed them out. For a while she thought it was some kind of effect of PTSD from the accident and ignored the ghosts she could see. On a whim, she decided to try and communicate with a couple of them, learning things from them that she never would have known if they were just illusions she created.

She doesn’t know how to summon ghosts or anything. She’s spoken with mediums and psychics to varying degrees of success about how to help ghosts or deal with them. She doesn’t know how to protect herself from violent ghosts, as she’s never had run ins with them so far in her life. Most of the ghostly residents of her apartment are body-less orbs or human spirits tied there by petty regrets or stubbornness.

She was ok with living her strange life, as the co-host and website manager for Alex's podcast, until the girls stuck their nose into a murder that was a little more supernatural, and a lot more real than their other stories.

✦ Relationships

Alex Huang

Best friend, shoulder to cry on, podcast co-host. Alex is Natalie's rock, if there's ever a day where Natalie can't fight her own battles, she knows Alex will be there for her ready to take on anything. She owes Alex for, well, a lot, but neither of them seem to care.
