✦ About

Meet Deceit, also know as Dice or my dumb son. He is one of my oldest existing D&D characters right after Tormus. He is a tiefling boy and I love him to bits even if he is just an total scumbag. I keep this character really dear to me. He has been used in campaigns but also developed as an character of their own and merged with an another OC of mine.

Deceit is greedy and self centered but has  a soft spot for certain things and values other's lives even if their  own needs would come as first most of the time. Kleptomaniac in nature with wits to at least come up with comebacks and excuses. He is highly talented at deceiving naïve minded creatures for his advantage and charismatic to the point to being able to deliver a decent distraction. Being originated from a fire demon it is no surprise that he has an short temper and can fire the place up real quick when he gets upset.

✦ Appearance

Deceit has bright yellow eyes, a red/orange skin with his tail slowly fading from that red to a purple tone. (so does his horns and ears.) His tail is somewhat thick and muscular enough to hold his whole weight up in the air and to deliver a blow with enough force to sent someone unconscious. Six razor sharp metallic looking spines sprout from his tailtip, along his tail and on his lower and upper back. His hair is brown with a hint of red, slightly curly and usually a mess. Four horns grow out from his head with a first set of smaller ones on the front near his forehead and bigger, dragon-like horns sprouting from behind them. His face shape is sharp, with visible jawline and a slightly pointed chin. His nose is a tad crooked upwards and his eyes looking mischievous and narrow with his eyebrows usually furrowed to an devilish look. Dice's ears are long and pointed, with a few cuts to them here and there accompanied with four piercings usually portrayed on his right ear. For his physical build Deceit doesn't look the strongest but makes it all up by being very agile by having an athletic build. He usually wears near skin tight black clothes and prefers cloaks to hide his bright skin tones and a force magic scar running wide along his back on the left side.

✦ Backstory

Formerly known as Kosilius to his four other siblings he grew up with in trashy alleys. Them having neglecting parents often leaving them to fend for themselves. His siblings are all super dear to him.

Eventually everyone grew up and were ready to follow ambitions of their own, Kosilius too had to leave. He never really thought he'd have any chance for a good life. Being a pessimist he saw starting off poorly with only ever having  their siblings to fall back to very troublesome and hard.
As he was old enough to be on his own he changed his name to Deceit, the man of trickery. Deceiving weak and naive minded individuals turned out to be his specialty. He saw no wrong in taking what he needed by unfair or evil means, that's just how he had always been doing things and a life of a criminal thief wouldn't get better from that either way. Or rather, he'd hardly be willing to put in the effort anymore.

Here starts a divide between his story with changing details. First one is his original backstory, the other is an alternative which comes to play as he gives up a precious memory and gains false ones in Tasha's madhouse and starts his journey in Out of the Abyss.

-Before Madhouse (True backstory)-
Along his path of finding a reason they got acquainted with a fair maiden. A  beautiful daughter of an wealthy nobleman. It seemed as such an ridiculous idea for a thief like him to be swooned over by someone from the higher class, but in time against all odds the two of them became lovers. Deceit of course never revealed that he was a thief, or a tiefling at that matter as he would disguise and appear human to his special lady. The daughter had little to no clue of his true identity but her father always had his suspicions and that made the young man watch for his back. He planned to tell about everything eventually but things got more difficult like they always used to.

During this time he also got familiar with an local underground network of thieves that found his skills very useful. Criminal business would provide him well but also made Deceit realize that he would be knees deep in shit if he was to ever be caught or found out about now as he started living a double life. By days he was a sophisticated young man with a beautiful woman by his side and at night, a crimson skinned thief.
Deceit had options. Retire and settle down with his wealthy lover or to continue his criminal path. In the end, in his young, naive mind Deceit saw it to be far more thrilling to continue his career. By making that decision, the balance between his two lives started to teeter on the edge.

Greed finally took over once a deal so lucrative, yet one that offered him a tough decision came by. Rob a nobleman's house accompanied by the best of thieves on the line of work, split the loot and disappear.
The noble in question was the father of his beloved. The tiefling thought to go through with it, thinking he wouldn't in fact get in trouble. Maybe he imagined profiting of the misfortune by being his fiance's support after.
A shitty plan, it proved to be. With his greed getting over his head and his success creating a false sense of security in his head he went in way too unprepared. One look and both father and the daughter recognized him.
The whole heist turned out to be a disaster. And for oh so long had the father waited to catch the lowly thief red handed and finally he could have a chance to show his disapproval.

For god knows how long the thief was imprisoned with rats as his company, no food no water. Eventually the rats would get hungry and be used to torture him as well. Those countless sleepless days living with creatures that only saw him as prey at times resulted in a deep fear of rodents.

In the end of his imprisonment he had lost his love, for all he knew she might've lost her face.
Weighting less by a limb and was forced to stay underground for a good few years, wandering far off from the city where his rock bottom resided was rough, yet nothing new but rather a gloom look back at his childhood years. It was a great time to do some self reflecting.
Even if such tragic events took place, Deceit never gave up on his ambitions nor learn from his mistakes. Deceiving was the only thing he was good at and he saw no chance for a better life than a thieves. From the day he set foot on to the new lands, he'd title himself the self proclaimed king of thieves and continue anew.

-After Madhouse (Alternative memories)-
Devoted to the one thing he is considered good at. Crime. That's what his career consisted of. Becoming a master of disguises, pulling out money of other's pockets and gaining infamy as a thief not to be meddled with, for he'd kill if he had to.
He had high hopes to shape his own happiness this way. Not being the one destined for greatness he'd build his own bridge to wealth.
Deceit was a daredevil of an thief. As if he was ready to ignore his very mortality, pulling out heists without much thinking of the probability of failure. Never learning from his mistakes made Deceit prone to injuries and slip ups. This behavior alarmed the guild of criminals he was working for. It was quickly noted that this man was a wild card, a liar and came off as rude and self destructive with his habit to jump in without thinking.

Aside from Deceit's career, He briefly had a family. A son.

His quite obsessive need to grow infamy constantly put both of their well being in danger. Naturally, this affected his and Gentry's relationship.

As a daring thief, the tiefling was often leaving traces of his crimes onto the scene which eventually lead him to be discovered. In the very beginning it was just small things. When he was younger getting off the hook was so much easier. As he grew so did the severity of his crimes. For as punishment by law, Deceit's freedom was taken from him which he wasn't too happy about. Deciding that life in prison dungeons wasn't for him lead to a series of jailbreaks. Both successful and failed attempts taught him some patience that he gravely lacked previously and tactical thinking. The breaks also taught him lock picking and how not to leave traces like a proper rogue.

With this game of cops and robbers dragging out between Deceit and the law, his guild grew tired of it and abandoned him, dropping him off for his reckless acts that deemed unfortunate and costly for them. He wasn't given second chances anymore, even after genuinely improving at his art of sneaking and sleight of hand.
That made Deceit a little bitter. He would stay on the path of crime, wanting to search his own happiness and freedom by his own hands. It might have something to do with the man wanting to prove himself worthy.
More he laid thought on how to effectively gain riches led to an amusing thought; A title of a rogue noble wouldn't hurt? It had a nice ring to it!

That's the last downfall he recalls making. It was such an unfortunate moment for him to be caught sleeping with a nobleman like that. That glorious misadventure costing him his left hand for men who slept with other men weren't generally well looked at.

Years passed with not much change for the better. During the years of rock bottoms and discovering rockier bottoms under those rock bottoms.  Deceit realized just how much he was tumbling downhill in his life. Looking for his lost arm and feeling but a ghost of it linger reminding him of those events. Yet the worst thing he might've done had been failing to grow his son, Gentry. The poor boy, where-ever he had disappeared to as he was imprisoned, Deceit knew not to expect him to be happy. It was likely that Gentry too, thanks to Deceit's neglective parenting style that he had adopted from his own father, he was probably the same as he was. With something little special kind of fucked up sprinkled in him by the thief.

Deceit can't recall what his son looks like nowadays. How many years had he been playing cat and mouse anyways?

The man gave himself time for self reflecting as it was quite impossible to search out his own blood and flesh for amends at that point. He is yet to reach a complete state of peace with his actions.

Lately he has felt himself haunted, the obsessive need to remember, to know who the mother of his son was as it as late has come to his realization that he in fact has no memory of her ever being present. This thought, this need to know is somewhat bothering. Discovery feels far.

The thief goes on with his antics, following through with one ideal in mind; Those who would dare to deny him his freedom would not find happiness in their lives.

✦ Relationships
Rolias
His brother of blood. A caring older brother who is always up for trouble if it is with Deceit. He is the more agile and cool headed of the two.
Leone
Dice's baby sister who became an skilled archer and the right hand girl of an highly ranked military person. She is the most righteous of their whole family and she questions a lot of Deceit's schemes and ideals, making their relationship tense at times.
Alphonze
Al for short is a greedy merchant with an deadpan attitude and a monotone voice, despite his height he is the oldest of all Dice's siblings and so has had the most responsibility over them. He is very close with Deceit and they go along well even if he isn't the most expressive person you'll meet
Cornelia
The forgotten middle child of the family. She was very timid and Deceit loved to tease her about it. She was the easiest for him to deceive and lie to. She would usually get the most in trouble purely because of his brother.
✦ Trivia
● During the campaign, Deceit only used his stolen money to legally buy something once. The rest of the shopping trips ended up with him stealing everything he needed to run from the expenses.
● The idea of having his left hand be amputated from elbow down was because the gauntlets in his original design looked like Deceit had robot arms.
● Deceit has a pet red macaw named Pannu which translates to pan (Cooking equipment) He caught this bird by throwing rocks at it and catching it mid air, calming it by shoving it inside his jacket.
● He has never shot a gun but is a very skilled swordsman. He's known for using his trusty moonlight scimitar in his adventures in the south.
