"Never meant to be queen, was a novice at magic,
Hid away in her gardens to avoid a fate so tragic"
Sunsettia the Gardener

Sunsettia was the second daughter of Queen Pheather and the younger sister of Queen Snovelene. As the second heir, she was expected by her mother and High Commission to learn magic alongside her sister, should Snovelene become unable or unfit to rule. Sunsettia believed it unlikely that something should happen to Snovelene and typically slacked off or skipped lessons. Because of this, she experienced Mewberty very late in her life and was never able to perform wandless magic.

Sunsettia acted as a confidant to Snovelene during Snovelene's short time as queen, giving her moral support and simple advice on various problems. After Snovelene's walk in the Timefrost Glades resulted in her disappearance, Sunsettia sent several search parties to find her. The search, unbeknowst to Sunsettia, was futile as Snovelene had been transported to the future. The only thing recovered from the search was the Royal Wand, which was treated as evidence of Snovelene's death. The High Commission barred further manhunts due to the high risks of frostbite, hypothermia, blizzards and beast attacks. To circumvent this, Sunsettia placed a large monetary reward for the return of her sister.

Sunsettia was crowned the 13th Queen of Mewni, though the crowning was delayed by 3 years on her insistence. (There is a largely incorrect anecdote that is supposedly set during those 3 years, with the premise being that Mewni technically had no Queen. This is inaccurate as Sunsettia was Queen, with the ceremony being a formality and not a necessity to Queendom.) Sunsettia rejected several titles and engravings for Snovelene, such as Snovelene the Frozen, Snovelene the Snowbound and The Queen of Timefrost Glades. Sunsettia insisted morbid references were unbecoming and inaccurate to her legacy. Sunsettia agreed to the title of 'Snovelene the Lost' under the stipulation it be changed to 'Snovelene the Found' upon being found, a promise that was carried out hundreds of years after Sunsettia's death by The First Chosen.

Sunsettia became very fearful of jinxes and superstition, believing her insistence that she would never ascend to the throne as causing the loss of her sister. As she was the 13th Queen, she began to view the number 13 as unlucky, and the number 12 as lucky. This belief eventually passed on to her subjects and resulted in many items being sold in a 'dozen' as well as many buildings excluding the number 13 from floors or room numbers. Sunsettia was known for steadily increasing her amount of lucky charms and practices she believed would undo bad luck. It was noted by her granddaughter that "Grandma [Sunsettia] is awake for 16 hours a day, and spends 10 of them performing elaborate rituals which seem to bring about more misfortune than they repel."

Sunsettia rarely left the castle, and was known to shut herself in her room during the entirety of winter.
