Name: Maris (Latin, "of the sea")

Alias: Viator (Latin, " voyager")

Maris was born in a poor fishing village to descendants of a great water mage.  However, a child with the gift had not been born for several generations prior to Maris' birth. It was prophesized by the village elder that he would be born with the power of the mage. His parents named him Maris as a reminder of his homeland as they believed he would one day become a man with a great destiny.

Growing up, Maris was expected to bring honor to his home and family due to his rare ability to manipulate water. Many of the other villagers were awed by him as magic was rarely seen.  He was treated differently, out of reverence and sometimes fear, leading to isolation and loneliness.  On days with stormy weather, the fishermen would bring him along to calm the sea. Due to the energy the task required, Maris took several days of bedrest to recover his strength.

The village economy relied upon fishing and began to suffer when the fish population in the surrounded sea dwindled for unknown reasons. Maris, wishing to help his village, decided to leave and seek out destiny, hoping to bring prosperity to his home.

Believing himself to be gifted by the gods, Maris journeyed inland to use his magic for whatever means necessary, so long as he profited and could send earnings home. However, Maris began to realize that many people were not in awe of him and paid him little attention, as his gift was not particularly strong or useful.

Devastated, Maris resorted to begging on the streets.  One evening, he saw a commotion in the center of a small town. An old man with a cart full of small lidded pots had set up shop, selling what he called miracle water, a panacea and cureall. People were clamoring to see this miracle water but not all were convinced to buy.  As the town center emptied and the old man readied to leave, Maris approached him, wanting to know the miracle water's secret.  Amused but unwilling to divulge the source or secret of the elixir, the old man turned to leave.  Out of desperation, Maris revealed his gift to the peddler.  Seeing the opportunity for showmanship and attracting attention, the old man struck a deal with Maris, promising him a share of his profits in exchange for using his magic to pretend to infuse the water with healing properties.  Maris was both saddened by the revelation of the fraud and tempted by the promise of pay.  Seeing little other choice, Maris agreed.

For many years, Maris, who became Viator and the old peddler travelled from place to place, selling the miracle water and rushing away to farther lands to escape claims of fraud.  When the old man became too old and eventually passed away, Viator took over and the time he spent in the fishing village became little more than memory.  And then came Salve.
