"Hehehehehehe."

Personality

Hideo is a dual dagger wielding rogue who will steal your most beloved possessions given the chance. He is a catfolk with a chaotic good alignment. His name means ‘excellent male child’ in Japanese, but is pronounced differently from its original Japanese roots. Instead of ‘hih-day-oh’, Hideo’s name is pronounced 'high-doh'.

Personality Traits

‘Mischievous’ would be the first word to come to mind when describing Hideo. His favourite activity is stealing. He specifically loves to steal items which hold great emotional value to its (previous) owner. This is his way of getting attention, be it negative or positive, although he himself doesn’t seem to be aware that his compulsive stealing has this underlying reason.

Hideo is also a prankster. Most of his pranks come down to “Are you looking for this?”, but it would be a mistake to think he has no other tricks up his sleeve. Switching salt and sugar in your kitchen, for example, is child’s play for him because of his fine motor skills. While his pranks might be annoying, they will mostly be harmless. Other than stealing and pulling pranks on people, Hideo likes to climb high up in trees, play with bubbles and catch fish.

For as many things as Hideo likes, there is also one thing he absolutely dislikes: magic. He will always treat a magic user with distrust, especially if said magic user is a bard. As such Hideo is unlikely to stick around when a bard has been spotted. You blink and he is gone.

Ideals

In Hideo’s ideal world there is always plenty of fish and bread to go around. He believes that everyone is born with the equal right to happiness. Because happiness is fish and bread to him, he believes that any problem can be solved as long as everyone has enough fish and bread to eat. His ideas of what the world should be like are unrealistic and with childlike ignorance, but despite this, he will always act with this ideal world in mind.

Contrary to what you might expect, Hideo will never go back on his word. Promises are stronger than bonds to him. Because of this, the number of promises he makes is few and far between. When he agrees to do something for you, he will often add “No promises” before disappearing. However, if you did somehow manage to get a promise out of him, he will deliver on his promise without fail.

Flaws

Hideo is unpredictable. Nobody knows what he might do next, including himself. If not giving any directions, Hideo will go with his gut feeling and rush into things. This has worked out for him while he was travelling alone, but this way of handling things will surely backfire when he is part of a group.

Bonds

Hideo might always be seeking attention, but he is a lone-wolf in nature. Although he gets along well with the catfolk from his village, he has no friends outside of Mura. It has been a long time since he last felt a sense of companionship.

Appearance

The villagers of Mura are catfolk, but very much resemble humans first and felines second. They stand out against other catfolk for having few feline features and little to no fur. Some have speculated that their appearance changed to be more humanlike over time to blend in more with the humans of their neighbouring city.

While the villagers of Mura might look strange to other catfolk, Hideo’s appearance would shock them. The few non-human features he has are foxlike instead of felinelike, which has brought up many questions in his community. Hideo, however, doesn’t seem to mind that he looks different from the catfolk around him. He is nonchalant about his appearance and his enjoyment of bathes is the only thing that keeps him looking somewhat presentable.

Story

22 years ago, Hideo was found by the catfolk of Mura, a small village in Tian Xia. All the villagers, even those younger than Hideo, have a story about how they found him. Some will claim they found him in the rice fields, while others might claim they went fishing and reeled him in. Hideo seems to believe every story without question.

Hideo might have grown up in an orphanage, but all the villagers had a hand in raising him. From a young age he has always been stealing things and pulling pranks to get attention. Despite this, he is well-loved by the villagers.

At age 20 Hideo became an adventurer and left Mura. While it is clear he must have left his beloved hometown for a good reason, he does not like to speak of it.

Because Hideo is so deeply connect to the villagers of Mura, it is good to know some of the history the village shares with Zaibatsu. The catfolk from Mura are a bit special as they copied the settlement type and naming conventions from their neighbouring human civilization. This human civilization in question is a nearby, prosperous city called Zaibatsu.

Mura got its name through the first interactions the catfolk and the humans from Zaibatsu shared. ‘Mura’ translates to ‘village’. The catfolk naming their village ‘Village’ after their first interactions with the humans from Zaibatsu is a good metaphor for what the relationship between the two settlements has been like since then.

Whenever Zaibatsu had a breakthrough in technology, be it farming technology or a new way to make stronger metal, Mura was sure to learn from them and start using the same technology quickly after. Nowadays Zaibatsu is known for its clockwork technology. With the invention of the steam engine came an industrial revolution for Zaibatsu. However, because of strict regulations any details on their steam engines and clockwork technology has not been shared with the outside world.

Relationships

Ahmya

Ahmya, also known as Ahm-nyah *anime girl cat “paws” pose*, is the village elder of Mura. Despite her powerful standing in the village, she would always make time for Hideo if he demanded it. This meant she could find him in the act of stealing something expensive instead of one day finding her hair pins to be gone. In times long passed she and Master Woo Ping went on adventures together.

Jolene Claude Mac Ealair

An aasimar gunslinger and one of Hideo's travelling companions. In Hideo’s eyes, Jolene is, above all else, a non-spellcaster. This by itself makes her superior to their fellow travelling companions. Jolene uses a weapon Hideo is unfamiliar with. It’s very loud (and also scary), but he cannot deny its incredible power and her unshakable aim. Although Hideo is bad at expressing it, he is grateful to her for travelling to a different content just to help him (a complete stranger at the time). Hideo sees her devotion to bringing good and justice to the world as admirable, even if he is unsure of what she thinks this should entail.

Master Woo Ping

A vanaras monk and one of Hideo's travelling companions. If Hideo had to describe Woo Ping in one word it would be “genki”. At first glance, Woo Ping may look like an old monkey man, but appearances can be deceptive. Woo Ping can be brutal on the battlefield and Hideo has seen him liven up when luscious women were involved during more than one occasion. Hideo is highly impressed with Woo Pings continued good health and spirit, but wonders when he’s going to run out of juice. The history between Woo Ping and Ahmya, the village elder of Mura, concerns Hideo.

Mordecae Corvus

A dhampir bard and one of Hideo's travelling companions. With Hideo's dislike for magic and bards specifically, he and Mordecae were never going to get off on the right foot. Mordecae, however, did everything in his power to ensure they absolutely wouldn’t. Ever since they met, Mordecae’s bullying has been a constant in Hideo’s life. Hideo is unsure of how to deal with it, as before he was usually the one causing mischief to get attention. Mordecae is giving Hideo a taste of his own medicine… At the very least, there’s always something interesting going on with Mordecae around, but Hideo would never admit to feeling that way.

Ovavgord

A goblin ranger and one of Hideo's travelling companions. Ahmya introduced Ovavgord to Hideo as a strong human ally who could aid them during their adventures. This confused Hideo because he had thought he could tell goblins and human apart until that point, but he decided not to question Ahmya’s wisdom. Ovavgord’s animal companion is a cat. For both their sakes, Hideo has decided not to think on the ethics of keeping a cat as an animal companion near a catfolk.

Reo

An orphaned catfolk from Hideo’s village. Although being 14 years apart, Hideo immediately took a liking to Reo when he arrived at the orphanage as a 4-year-old. They would often spend time together planning out “heists” (stealing cookies form the kitchen) or finding the best hiding places around town (up in the trees).

Robijn

A mermaid oracle and one of Hideo's travelling companions. One day when fishing Hideo reeled her out of the water. After realizing he had not just in fact caught the biggest fish of all time, he flung her back into the sea and didn’t give her another thought. To his surprise, their first encounter wouldn’t be the last, as she returned to the land looking for something, or perhaps multiple things. For being a fish out of water, Robijn seems to be quite comfortable traversing the land in her wheelchair. Her interest in shiny things almost surpasses his own, but he is hesitant to bond over it with her seeing as she reeks of magic and seems to bring misfortune with her wherever she goes.
