Virgil doesn't talk much about his past but that is more because Virgil doesn't really talk much to anyone if he can help it. Socially incompetent and awkward, the fact he spends most of his time reading books and tending to a swarm of happiny likely hasn't done much to improve his social savvy. Still, his heart is in the right place and will gladly help out when it is needed or requested or because his anxiety makes it difficult for him to refuse requests out of fear of upsetting others.
