On his home planet, the less colors in one's eyes, the higher their rank. Prince Naut has no pupils, meaning he is a "Single", the highest possible rank. The thing is, a society that cares so much about "pure blood" leads to inbreeding. Singles are often blind or nearly blind. Prince Naut is legally blind, though he can see things that are very close up and read large print.
After their planet exploded, he escaped with his royal guard, Alruba. The two became close even after landing on Earth, but Naut couldn't cope with the loss of everything he'd ever known. Alruba (now known as Jacob), however, was thriving. This led to them going their separate ways. The two now rarely talk.
*dream squad mention: I first saw Jacob's story in a dream, where I was Soalis looking for him with Naut after he went missing, and found out he was an alien
