In summary:
Magda was the only daughter of the head of the King's Guard. Trained to protect the royal family from a young age, she was close friends with the princess, and vowed to keep her safe, no matter the threat. When the princess turned 18, she made a deal with a witch to help her find true love. The witch did as she was asked and put the princess to sleep, but was confronted by Magda. Magda was more realistic than her careless, idealistic friend, and did not believe in true love; she believed the witch had taken advantage of the naive princess. In her fury, Magda attacked the witch but was cursed instead, and her burning anger turned to roaring flames.
She was cursed to take the form of a dragon, eternally guarding and protecting her friend, her princess, from any knight or warrior that was not strong enough or true enough to be her friend's love. If they could not get past her, they would have no hope of supporting the princess.
Years pass, the kingdom falls apart as the King and Queen mourn the loss of their daughter, and rumors of a dragon in the mountains where the young princess disappeared fade into myth. A traveler, scavenging for old artifacts to sell, stumbles upon the sleeping princess, and rouses Magda's fury in the process. He manages to out-maneuver the dragon and wake the princess, but as her friend is pulled out of her curse, Magda's rage is extinguished as well.
What's left is a very old but naive princess, a very confused traveler, and a very tired and angry dragon girl (Magda).
