Ricin
Iceblown Winds
The Iceblown Winds are among the fiercest of northern Iserafi factions. They rely on making themselves the strongest of all the factions through 2 main methods: constant training, and vigilance over the coupling of its members. The strongest or smartest of both sexes must compete against their fellows (especially siblings) for the right to fall in love and take a mate of their own. It's a brutal world, and the sabotage of your opponent is not uncommon. Most would do anything to get an advantage. Ricin was born into this world and was expected to be the most powerful of their siblings.
raised in combat
For a time, strength was the only thing that Ricin was trained for. Although their body was lean, it was muscular, and they could move bloody fast. Ricin had even accepted that they must hurt - or even kill - their siblings in the match. There would be no room for weakness. During the time of the Disowning, they may have to fight one of their own. No member of the Iceblown Winds, with the exception of its council, of course, was more important. Even a mate could be taken away should strength be lost or stolen, or a match deemed unfit. One day, while training, Ricin found an Iserafi worth fighting for.

Sarin
Sarin was an Iserafi who identified as gender fluid, and Ricin was fascinated by her. Instead of focusing on strength in combat, Sarin focused on weakening their opponent using quick slices to draw blood, and poison to enter those small wounds. On top of that, they were fast. They would make a fine hunter, Ricin thought, and then dared hope, as they spoke, a fine mate. Sarin seemed to agree. The two grew closer, promising each other they'd fight to the death to stay together. The council, however, did not seem to agree with their assessments.
A Test for two
On the day of Ricin and Sarin's testing to become worthy, it was announced that they would fight each other. No matter who won the match, they would never be together. If they refused to fight, or the council did not believe it, they would be put to death by Disowning. There was to be no weakness among its members. They had to make a choice: A brief time together, or a future alone. They made the choice and were cast out to die in the wilderness.

wilderness
Out in the darkness of the arctic winter, all the two could do was struggle to survive. Unable to see anything but a red glow in the distance, they had no choice but to keep going. Many times, Ricin feared, as he huddled in their makeshift igloo, that he would wake up to a stiff form beside him- or not wake up at all. They barely made it to the red glow's edge: a volcano, melting the ice around it and creating a tundra pocket where it was a bit warmer, if still dark. It was here he and Sarin made their home. They had nowhere else to go.
Volcano
Under the volcano, Ricin and Sarin grew plants to attract prey and make poisons. There was nowhere to catch the fish they were accustomed to without running into their old faction, so they traded these poisons for the food they needed to get through the harsh winter. Slowly, they began making a home for themselves, falling into a blissful routine together. Ricin has a niggling fear, however, that they do not deserve this happiness, as an outcast. They do not deserve it, and the universe will see they are too happy, and it will all be taken away. It was only a matter of time before a patrol found them, after all.
