Her mom is an angel, strong and selfless. Anita desperately wishes to be like her and offer the same support her mom has given to so many, but she's not sure she'll ever be able to compare.
Being an only child for most of her life, suddenly having not only a younger brother but a magical one at that took quite an adjustment period. She helps take care of Cruz as best she can but that still means occasionally butting heads as siblings. It's difficult for Anita to understand Cruz's thought processes but she knows he means well at heart.
They're no longer speaking, and from Anita's perspective it's not from lack of trying. Their history is patchy at best, convoluted at worst. While she definitely doesn't hate her father, he lost his chance to parent her long ago and has only succeeded in damaging whatever bonds they could have fostered.
He misses his daughter terribly and feels the heavy weight of guilt for failing her and her mother many times over. At the same time, it's a struggle for him to understand that there is no obligation for them to interact simply because they're family.
